Sharp and positional games

Is there a difference between sharp and positional games at my level or is it just an illusion. What is the difference between the two as I tend to believe that both can lead to a sharp endgame. Also, is it more sensible to play 1.e4 or 1.d4.
I tend to score slightly better with d4 but all my coaches and friends tell me to play e4 because it is more 'tactical'
