I guess it's surprising because there are no major pieces hanging, there are no pieces or pawns that have crossed the mid line. Black is attacking zero white pieces. And of course it's only move 5... all of this is true but white is already lost.
Shockingly Bad Move
Interesting. Well atleast now I wont make this mistake in the future. On second thought; I probably wont remember this by tommorow morning.
Well, the queenside finachetto isn't so uncommon in f4 openings, and usually it's the case you should play Be2 and 0-0 before moving the d pawn because Ng4 can really kick your butt. So instead of the specific position you can just remember it for those times when you're playing f4 and Bb2 ![]()
But I was still surprised it was that bad so early.
i wont remember this after 1 hour lol
No need to remember such a bad move due to these reasons.
1. Play synergy with pawns. ( No need to play " d3", there is no urgent need to defend "e4" square .. As you already moved "f4" , you may consider dropping your knight on "e5" square. So Bb5 and removing black's defending kt on "e5 " square is a good plan.
For that strat,
1. Nf3 (priority, no other better square)
2. Bb5 (reducing defense on e5 square)
3. Castling
4. Now you can consider "e3" to activate Queen kt ( There is the plan, the plan is to drop kt on "e5" and if your kt is attacked by black bishop by "d6" , your queen kt will support with Nd2- Nf3.

P.S. Bird opening is not that strong, there are a lot of repertoire for black to defend .
I was black in that game, and I won, but not because I played the engine best moves.
I play the bird in blitz sometimes for fun, most players aren't used to seeing it, and your first 10 or so moves can be played really fast and you'll have a pretty equal position.
Frankly, I'm not really buying that reading (you sure you got it right?).
I didn't either at first. I thought something was wrong with the engine.
So I tried defending it against the engine a few times and it was just disaster after disaster.
What do you think of this position with black to move?
I was surprised to see the engine say that 5.d3 is so bad, that black is already ahead 2.00
(basic moves would be Ng4 + d4 and there's catastrophe on white's dark squares)
d3 undefends the e3 pawn allowing moves like Ng4, d5 or e5 with a totally wining position.
Remember, don't push your pawns if you don't really need to.

That's not the topic.
For example, I challenge you to make a position as mundane looking as that which is also lost on move 5. That's the topic.

That position seems lost

Lol, I feel bad for OP, who tried to share tips and people teach him!
I remember that weakness as I did similar mistakes several times vs stockfish and have to resign in opening, Lol.
For example.

Resign! 0-1. ![]()

I remember one guy posting a topic about his opponent cheating (his opponent didn't) but he'd made the same mistake in an f4 opening and his opponent played Ng4 and Nb4 and had a few forks in a row, and it made the guy feel like he was playing an engine haha.
