The shortest professional chess game in the history of chess was played by Bobby Fischer in 1970

If I remember correctly one player said something like, “Now is when I resign.” and the resignation was enforced.

The Fischer-Spassky 1972 WCh game 2 was a forfeit which means the game was not played.. The Fischer-Panno 1970 Interzonal game was played, Fischer waited 10 minutes before playing 1.c4 and Panno resigned OTB 1 minute later in protest of the scheduled start time.
