With the SuperBet Chess Classic coming to a close, we see that 3/4 of the games were drawn.
At this stage it’s become a meme that super-GM’s will merely be a boring draw (unless they go for the Bongcloud attack!), so it begs the question:
Should a win be worth 3 points?
Similar to soccer switching from 2 to 3 point wins in the 80’s, the idea would be that the meta changes and players have more incentive to play aggressively. Also players shouldn’t be tempted to go into draw-heavy openings (Berlin; Marshall) as they’re essentially wasting points.
It would also make the last day of competition more entertaining, as it’d be less likely for a player to be that far ahead and easier for major jumps in the rankings to be made.
