Should chess be considered a sport?

The New York Times has Chess as a sport.

They have this article in the sports section about GM Walter Browne.

yes chess is a sport. Competition where you can improve is sport.

So looking for a job is a sport.

Dating is a sport.

Finding the fastest checkout in a supermarket is a sport.

Driving on public roads and trying to get where you are going a few seconds more quickly regardless of how much danger you place other people in is a sport.

Getting one´s child into a desirable school is a sport.

Oh! Has the way I´ve said this given the impression that describing any competeitve activity as a sport is completely and utterly lame?

Odd, that.

Video games are not sport and will never be anything but a waste of time. Fishing, on the other hand, is the supreme time waster and is most certainly sport, especially for anglers who adopt a no kill policy.

Herein lies the difference between sportsmen and fishermen.  I have no interest in bass fishing or carp spearing, because I don't want to eat the damn' things.

Trout fishermen who catch and release are all kinds of crazy.

Are relaxation and entertainment a "waste of time"?  Are work and sleep then the only ways to avoid wasting time?  If so, then we might as well join the Borg collective now, instead of waiting for them to finally arrive here and assimilate us by force.

Stating that video games are a waste of time also begs the question: is chess a waste of time?

You know when they have a fishing show on TV? They catch the fish and then let it go. They don't want to eat the fish, they just want to make it late for something.

Is chess a sport, yes or no?

There is a simple way to transition from fishing back to chess: Stockfish!

Rybka, too, is a fish.

To all you chess players how maintain that chess is not a sport I ask: What is chess?

Is it a science, an art, a sport, a board game, a passtime, an activity? The difficulty in defining chess is that it is everyone of these attributes and more. Baseball, soccer or hockey are just sports so when comparing chess to these types of sports that have only the spots characteristic we start to argue that chess is not a physical exersion-type sport. Obviously, chess is a different category of sport - perhaps it is in a category apart. No one can deny that chess shares many sports attributes. Inversely, no one seems to be able to convince the nay sayers that it is a sport. Why? Because it is not simply and uniquely a sport. It is far more complex, intricate and mysterious. Regardless, chess is a wonderful confidence builder that has proven that it can change lives... I don't know if my argument resonates with some of you or not, hopefully so. But, I would like to ask you once again: once everyone has weighed in, can we give this topic a rest? I trully beleive that we've argued it to death! Please be good sports and carry on with your chess games!

Well said until you reached the point that an articulate and reasoned response should put an end to the discussion.
