Should I quit chess?

"Chess is a sea in which a gnat may drink and an elephant may bathe".

Maybe one day engines will solve chess and tell us the perfect move in every opening position. However, no human could possibly review or memorise all that. For amateurs - the vast majority of us - that's even more the case. In effect, then, for humans, chess will always remain a bottomless sea.

We saw this in spades in the recent world championship match. Despite a situation where two world-class professional players were meeting after months of preparation and access to super computers, they were frequently out of book early, there was a lot of variety in the openings, and the games were very interesting. Imagine what the situation is for amateurs.

So much depends on our perspective. If you're relentlessly focused on elo and tournament points, then chess can be frustrating and punishing. But if you love chess, then chess will always keep on giving you lovely gifts.
