Should there be a 'take back move request' button?

Alright, we can do one/player...

How about the "Bribe" or "Brown Nose" button that instantly promotes a pawn?  It'll change this position a lot:

Any ways, we're getting off topic with silly buttons.  I think the OP brings up a good topic and I stick to my original statement.

I never met a remorseful troll before !

That made my day, Irontiger.  Laughing

There's already a "takeback button". It looks exactly like the "resign button".

It would be great to use it when trying to coach someone to play better online.  For example, you're coaching someone and they make a terrible move and you tell them why it's bad and have them find a better move.

There already is, you can play a takeback game where you can take back moves.

There are so many studies out there which shows without a doubt that given the opportunity most of us will cheat/steal/lie to receive a benefit/reward.

1. One study had a group assembled in a meeting room waiting for a fake meeting. There was a table at the back of the room full of food. They were told that the meeting would start an hour late, and informed not to touch the food, since this was catered for another meeting, they were then left alone....and observed with a hidden camera. Most of them "stole" food from the table.

We would like to believe that most people are "good at heart"...but the fact is that the opposite is true.

Now, if we assume that the above is true, and a correct reflection on most of us...what do you think will happen if we put in a "take back button"?

I like this.  Take back the whole game (with a loss) and start a new one.

ekorbdal

No.  It has no place in any game, sport or any form of competitive activity. If you make a mistake then learn by it and get on with it.

Dutchday

Absolutely not. Too many people here act like whining children already.

What do you think of the idea of chess.com adding another button to games that allows a player to request that the other player allow them to take back a blunder?

Note: I'm deliberately keeping the question general and not delving into the various kinds of conditions/restraints that might be involved, such as allowing it to be used only once, and automatic-decline, such as with draw requests, or a requirement of mutual agreement to enable the option for a game, etc...

What made me ask the question is that if two opponents are playing OTB in an informal (e.g. non-tournament) setting, sometimes they agree to allow one of the players to take back a move to preserve the overall value of letting a game proceed without being ruined by an uncharacteristic blunder, or noob mistake.

My immediate thought was NO WAY!

However, upon reflection, maybe such an option could be made available for unrated games only.  This would allow, for example, two friends to have a casual "beer game" as they might in their homes.

SmyslovFan

Karapovian, they already have it for unrated games, as has been pointed out.

I think takeback should be allowed up to 3 times. Slight catch, 1st time you can takeback no matter what. Other 2 times the opponent must agree. I think this would make silly mouse slips (which I have lost literally thousands of games) less frustrating.

OldChessDog

No.

Doggy_Style

If the craven are given a takeback request button, I want a button that blows a raspberry.

Yes! Mouse slips happen all the time. I hate to see a good game turn bad even when I'm winning. I would go so far as to propose a "give back" button in case the opponent is too stoic to ask.

In the interest of fairness though. The time it takes to go through the take back process should be charged to the blunderer so that there can be some kind of incentive for careful play.
