Soda (carbonated water) in Spanish is agua con gas. Which literally translates to water with gas. I always got a kick out of that in Spanish class.

At a Mexican restaurant, "I'll have a glass of water with that. Oh, and put some gas in it."

Your waiter will give you a weird look if you say anything like that. We would say "agua mineral" for carbonated water.

Let akafett take you out for dinner. I think it would be full of good humored laughs. Tongue Out

Checkers is basically playing chess with pawn moves and some other rules, so all of those checker-players don't know that they are actually playing a dumbed-down version of chess.

Well careful of saying that cause someone might get back and say that chess is the dumbed-down version of Go, if you're familiar with Go. (I think there's more of a similarity between checkers and chess, but apparently, these are all compared to one another.) At any rate... I'll stick with chess for now.

@ Dragon: To elaborate on strategy in checkers; if given a jump, you must take it. So, you want to force your opponent to make undesirable jumps so you can get an advantage of board space (that's the way I understand it).

"Let akafett take you out for dinner. I think it would be full of good humored laughs." You are correct. Tongue Out

you still waste your time moving 32 pieces around on a checkerboard?

akafett

I have heard someone say, "What a waste of time. It's like watching grass grow. I mean I can move faster than that," while I was playing a game.

Ok, I watched a really bad sci-fi movie over the weekend called Reptilicus. Two guys were playing an intense game of chess half way through this really bad movie. (How bad did I say this movie was?...REALLY bad.) So, anyway, these guys were playing chess and I decided to watch carefully at the moves they made. Not only did they both have exposed Kings, one guy picks up his Bishop and moves it two spaces over, from like f4 to d4. Did you get that?

This was the worst depiction of a chess game that I have ever seen in a movie.

Anyone see any worse?

I think in one of the Twilight movies, Edward takes his king, knocks over a piece, and then puts it on another square.

What's funny about this quote is that it looks like akafett has been watching Twilight. lol. He'll have a lot to talk about at dinner.

akafett

Actually, I've never seen Twilight.

That's what they all say...

akafett

Twilight Zone perhaps. Those were good.

sorry about that!

I have never seen Twilight, I just saw a movie review on it. And then decided not to watch the movie...

Lol. Well I read the Twilight series (all 4 books) back when I was in middle school. It was awesome. And that was just before the movies were released, so I got to use my imagination before the characters were made for me! One of the lucky ones, if I may say so!

My parents were and still are huge Buffy fans. We have a mug in our house with WWBD? on it.

but

Twilight? What? I haven't seen the movie or read the books.

But if you ever watch Lord of the Rings, watch the movie first before reading the books. Otherwise, you're just going to get frustrated.

I agree with this one- I could only get through The Hobbit and half of the Lord of the Rings trilogy before giving up. The movies were also long and convoluted- The Return of the King lasted four hours long!

Well... I haven't read LOTR but I've seen one or two of the movies and I'm still confused about what happened. Wouldn't the book provide that background information? Sounds confusing either way. One day I hope to read it.
