BTW one of my friends IRL became a national chess master this week. (He texted me at 3AM!!) I'm so proud of him. I asked him what his next goal is, in terms of chess. He said it was to finish reading the chess books he still has. Lol :) I don't think he'd mind me sharing this anonymously. I thought it was sweet :) And it's quite humbling to know a real chess master. WOWZA!!!

Wow, that's awesome! Good for him!

Ahh I never found my green dress for New Year's Eve tonight. Meh! I'm wearing a long black dress instead. I like it better anyway! TMI I know. Tonight, wine glass in hand, I'll make a secret toast in honor of you all in this thread. hehehe. We're going to hit 1 million views in 2015. Maybe by August or something. Hooooray!

Hahahaha lol. And lol @ pretending to be a girl. More like pretending to be the cute cuddly reindeer (who thinks it's a dog) from Frozen!

About New Year's Eve... at the party thing I went to, it was very formal so they had a live band in the backyard area. A piano player/singer, drums, and electric guitar I think it was. And at one point that night, they asked me to request a song!!!! So I chose "Stand By Me". That was fun! Hope you all had a nice New Year's Eve too.

Nice song choice! I'm actually on vacation in a hotel where they have a huge (almost life-sized) chess board outside. I played a few games with my family and it was fun.

playing a fellow club member in the pub - background conversations - CHESS IS BORING - LIKE WATCHING PAINT DRY - WASTE OF TIME - NERDS etc - friend asks - HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED CHESS - guy replies NO - upon making my move - i think - EXACTLY !!!!!!!!!!!

les170171

playing a fellow club member in the pub - guy comes over - I PLAY CHESS - USED TO BE SCHOOL CHAMPION - WON MANY TROPHIES AND TOURNAMENTS etc - do you fancy a game ? - SURE - then as ALL chess players know - you can tell from the opening - TRUTH OR ABSOLUTE RUBBISH - only takes a few moves - play on the board

Try a game of backgammon or mastermind with a woman and see how you fare.

We men and women do not have the same interest in playing games.

I don't know whether to interpret that as a sexist comment or not. As for December_TwentyNine, I think it's just that less women are given the opportunities to learn and enjoy chess (which is why there are less female grandmasters, etc.), and the men are expected to learn chess. It's society being inadvertently sexist. Similarly, women don't tend to be as interested in math and science as men for the same reasons.

Deli worker after seeing me with an open chess book: 'Chess, huh? I know how the horsey moves!'

Then, 'My husband taught me chess a few years ago but back then I had a cheat sheet. Now, without the sheet I only know the horse...'

My comment is absolutely genuine and based on 45 years living with my wife, we all have different interests in life and chess is not on top of the priority games  for women and my wife did tell me why and this is another subject as I just wanted to anwswer your question.

My friend and I were analyzing the Veresov attack in the school library, and one of the jocks came over and said, "Why are you guys just playing yourselves?"

Me: We're analyzing.

Noobish Jock: So playing yourselves.

He got the death stare when he accused us of playing with ourselves :O

Might be fun (or fun-ny) to launch into a long rant, in-depth analysis of the position if someone asks, 'Who's winning?' . . .

'Well, with his last move, Black is attempting to open up play on the queenside but he still faces White's solid pawn phalanx on b3 and c4. White clearly has the spatial advantage with more mobility of his minor pieces across the kingside squares and once his queen finds her niche along the partly open g-file, Black will be squirming for counterplay. The weak pawn on f7 will become a rallying point for White once his attack becomes coordinated. But Black's well-positioned bishop, fianchettoed on b7, will continue to harass White from long range. At this point, even though Black has good chances and can keep pressing, it's a coin flip.'

Non-chesser:  'Wha' ??!?'    Embarassed   Surprised
