Sinquefield Cup 2014

Good games last night.  I think Carlsen might go for it against Naka today.  It also looks as if Carlsen might break away from FIDE as he doesn't seem in a hurry to sign up to the World Championship match.  Interesting times.

A bit shame with a WC without MC though, allthough I can understand why he won't.

Indeed, MVL vs Carlsen turned out to be quite exctiting and the game of the round. Topalov played like he does on bad days, unsound attack and falling apart, but very impressive by Caruana of course. Little happened in Aronian vs Naka and that was a good start for the latter.

Today then: Nakamura vs Carlsen is the grudge game, will be nice when Naka finally wins one against Carlsen but this one I think will be drawn. Two black draws in the first rounds would be a decent start for Carlsen.

Aronian vs Topalov is an encounter where Topalov usually has the advantage, but now he is black and played badly in the first round. If Aronian starts with two draws as white it would be somewhat disappointing, but that's what I think will happen when Topalov plays it more safe than in his first game.

Caruana vs MVL is Caruana's chance to get a great start. After a win in the first round white against the most inexperienced player should be a game where he is not content with a draw. I guess this will be the one decisive game today, 1-0.

Carlsen has to be feeling down after missing his opportunity in the endgame against Maxime ...Qd3 had potential but Magnus lacked the wherewithal to calculate the line ..ho hum ; another day another lack lustre performance from Magnus; go Hikaru , you can take this guy .

"another day another lack lustre performance from Magnus"

For a troll like you all performances by Carlsen are lacklustre.

Sticks and stones buddy , sticks and stones.

It looked like Naka had his chances yesterday.  He just managed to get his knight trapped on e8, and had to bail with the draw.

Spectator94

hoping for another dramatic encounter between naka and carlsen just like in Zürich

I thought naka did well to draw ..Aronian's Queen infiltration looked dangerous but Naka defended well and at the end it was Aronian who bailed with perpetual when there was attacking potential for him but he didn't see the line

I'm looking fortward to tonight's game ..surely Naka has to beat Carlsen one of these days ?

Spectator94

you mean carlsen will beat nakamura, there's no ''we''

shell_knight

Eww, don't link all American's to Naka.  I'm for Carlsen.

fabelhaft

What's wrong with Naka?  Don't people usually root for the underdog anyway?  Hopefully Naka will get a draw.  I'd love to see that kind of ending, especially if it's a queen ending!

He came from our mileu and culture. I feel that there is a "we" here.

this is not olympics, this is a individual rating super gm tournament lol

Caruana already in serious trouble against MLV, on only move 15.

And he's playing the white pieces, no less.

varelse1

Looks like Aronian is trouble as well against Topolov. Move 12.

fabelhaft

All the games look quite exciting, Caruana is blitzing out his moves and engines don't like his position (yet) but surely he is still in some deep preparation.

fabelhaft

Carlsen vs Naka almost looks like a KID now.

fabelhaft

This will not be the day for Naka's first win against Carlsen.

Lol @45

fabelhaft

Aronian blundered or played a great exchange sacrifice.
