Slow Players are So Frustrating!

Just played a 30 Minute rapid game where my opponent was excruciatingly slow. He took upwards of 5 minutes per move, and at the end when he ran out of time I still had >20 minutes on my clock. If an opponent is this slow, at what point is it NOT rude to send a text message asking him to move, or resign, or something? Or even sending a text such as “are you still alive?”

In daily its even worse when your opponent consistently waits 3 days per move even in obvious recaptures

It depends.

If he lets time pass because he is losing and doesn't want to take checkmate or resign, he is wrong.

Other than that, he is free to take as long as he wants on a move. Your opponent doesn't have to adapt to your timing. If you choose to play a 30 minute game you have to take that into account. In this case, it would be rude to ask him to hurry up because you want him to.

Understood. Maybe I need to experiment with the time format best suited to my game.

I think some players like to drive their opponents nuts in key positions then play sneaky moves that trip the opponent up who's been expecting something else to trigger blunders

Play blitz instead. Problem solved.
