I was playing in the 1300s until I played a few games against a friend rated mid-1400s. I was pulverized.

It totally messed my game up; I have dropped 150 points. Can this really happen?

Hey I’ve had a similar experience! I’m a 900 in Rapid working with a goal of 1000 at the end of 2021 and I’ve had a few times where I lost against someone slightly better than me. It can mess you up - your playing confidence but also tactical sharpness and planning ability. I think once you accept that you lost and start working on your weaknesses, you’re able to look forward and come out better in the end. When I was end-900s I got nervous about finally getting the 1000 goal and messed up, dropping back to 750. I needed to start all over again. Instead of immediately pressing the ‘Start a New Game’ button I started doing lots of puzzles and lessons on here and reading the Reassess Your Chess book by Mr Silman. Now I’m almost back at my past rating level. Long story short, don’t worry, do your puzzles and lessons and maybe some other research and you’ll be fine. It’s advice from a lower-rated player so you might take it with a grain of salt but this is my experience. Good luck!!

Sound advice!!

I find myself rushing thru the basic first moves, undermining my defensive game.

Must slow down.

Thanks!!!!!!

(will check  Silman out)
