good question blurredlife , i guess there may be many titled (FIDE) players at chess.com , it is afterall a very popular chess site

do i know any ? im just a middling piddling 1600 lol so the answer is no as i never face them generally so cannot introduce myself to them

but i think FIDE titled players do play here on a regular basis but for obvious reasons do not let everyone know

batgirl

Members with titles are vetted by chess.com.  They're the real deal.

So batgirl, who makes the distinction of GM? Chess.com? I mean I do know that they are no doubt great chess players but who classifies them? Themselves at a high score? FIDE? or chess.com. Cause couldn't you yourself add GM batgirl and be classified as a grandmaster? I mean couldn't anyone do that?
thegreat_patzer

GM is a specific title you have to Earn and request from FIDE.

there's an applicaiton and everything.  it is not normally ONLY the result of a high "score" (which in chess is called a rating)- but winning a qualifying percent of games in a strong chess tournament.  it is awarded exclusively by FIDE.

you can call yourself anything you want - but without the proof of a legitamite FIDE certificate- chess.com will not call you a "GM".  (which is short for 'international grandmaster' btw).

-----

the Master titles should be considered very special, hard to earn achievements of exceptional skill playing "on the board" chess. -in real tournaments and not online.

there are a number of achievements.  Gm is almost the Best.   CM,FM,NM,IM and GM are all given recognition by chess.com.

I saw one person on here using, for his profile pic, a white square with the letters GM in red. It was funny because he actually confused a few people into believing he was really a grandmaster.

GrandMother; Gran Mogol; Give Me; General Motors; Garlic Man...

But the masters on here , are they actually masters in real life or just awarded that by chess.con because of their rank?

They have earned their titles by playing in real life at organized events. Chess.com doesn't award titles, no matter what your rating is on here.

Chess.com just recognizes official titles, after examination of their certificates, by designating those individuals with their appropriate titles. A person with a chess.com "IM" designation first earned that title through FIDE.

Is there any other way you need it explained?
