So I want to start a Chess club...

Hello everyone.

So I started to get interested in chess about 2 months ago. Being interested in it, I made a little research and was disappointed to find out there is no chess club at my university. So I was like "Hey, why wouldn't I start one myself?"

The only little problem is that I don't really know what they are all about. Are they like courses, or are they just places where people can play chess toghether? Or are they both?

What are the things I should do if I want to start a Chess club? What are your suggestions for me?

Thanks.

Clubs primarily are just a way for players to meet up and play. Your university may require special steps to be formally recognized, so you might check with them.

At a minimum, you need some sets, a place to meet, a scheduled time and somewhere to advertise.

Well, I see there's nothing really that hard about it, then. I don't need to be an expert in chess or anything happy.png

Thanks.

For your club to be decent and attractive, you need things for your club. You need digital clocks, chess books about opening, tactics, strategy and endgames. You need chess boards. You must also implement rating system to your members, so that they can monitor their progress/strength. With a rating system, you know the players that are good match.

With club you play with other clubs, join tournaments, play together, study together, help beginners and create your own tournament. You can play in different format like rapid, blitz etc.

Implement the proper rule of chess like touch move rule, no take back of moves, illegal move should be penalize accordingly. Other rule liek 3 move repetition, 50 move draw rule, enpassant capture etc should be also applied.

You don't need all that to start. I don't run a university club but we meet at a local restaurant and players being their own equipment.  The vast majority of games are played unrated, without clocks, and very few people notate.

We also run official rated tourneys, two to four times a year, in a rented location, but the most you need at first is a location, some sets and some people.

We set a club that has morphed into an academy. We started with a room, two tables, four chess sets, two clocks  and two enthusiasts; now we have the same room with somewhat nicer decor, the tables and chess sets have multiplied by four and we got the help of a 2200+ player to work part time as coach.

Yeah, I will keep it simple at the beginning. Then, if my club gains in popularity, maybe I could start introducing more complex stuff, like jambyvedar suggested.
