Some players on this site are way too good/bad for their rating.

The problem I see with the ratings is that they fluctuate too easily. I believe it’s due to too much rating points being won and lost per match, I mean going up and down by 10s every game?? For maximum rating precision, in my eyes, it should only change +- 1 or 2 per match.

Before I begin I would like to say that overall, this site is great - impressive features, nice aesthetics, it's all really good. But I have a constructive criticism that I would like to make.

It's getting to the point now where it isn't fun to play on this site most of the time. I can't always enjoy it because no-one seems to play at the level their rating suggests. I generally hover around the 1700-1900 level, but I usually feel like I'm always playing someone either 1500 or 2100 despite only challenging members within 50 points of my rating.

I play on other chess websites, and this one seems the most unbalanced. This is why I don't play on this site very much for that reason, despite how good the site is otherwise. I sometimes go weeks or even months without visiting, which only increasing the problem because that causes my rating to jump about even more!

Thoughts?

that is how blitz is for me here... random and winning or losing doesn't depend on me, but on my opponent. I play in low ratings and I come around games that my opponent does no blunders, no mistakes and plays a perfect game and then next opponent or other opponents in the same session do the same. We are talking about around 1000 rating. Then, in another session I play vs opponents in contests of who will do the most blunders. I blunder, they blunder back, then they miss mate in one, which I didn't see myself as well... madness.

On top of that, the more I win and my rating goes up, the easier the opponents.

If I have to give an explanation that will be inconstancy. All players, from 700 to 2000, they are capable of playing good and bad games. The higher ratings play more good than bad ones. They are more consistent. Therefore, all comes to what game your opponent will play vs you. You might be lucky and someone much higher than you plays one of his few bad games vs you. Or you might be unlucky and someone much lower than you plays one of his few perfect games vs you.

In a way seems more like poker, but with a false feeling that our play contributes much more to the result than luck, which probably isn't true.

I like to mention that I have risen from 1800 to 2000 and fallen to 1800 again in less than a month. Only because of getting into losing streaks.

From almost 2500 to 1780. Its always such a pleasure to play these players.

These comments are interesting and well written. I'll try to address some of them.

I do try to play in a good mental and physical condition, and I do agree with dk-Ltd that luck might be playing a factor with some of my games, and I'm getting frustrated because of that.

While I don't agree that chess.com is the ONLY site for chess, it is DEFINITELY the best when it comes to features! That's why what I want more than anything to get a good experience here, as I'm sure we all do. happy.png

I think this boils down to why do you play chess? I am a medicare player who does not mind hanging around 200 points below peak, because of the same reason that I play against opponents miles away. I am not interested in playing egos rather than chess, as I happen to enjoy the game.

I agreed, lag is bad these days.I dont enjoy playing 1 min here anymore currently, may be later when they solve their lag.The quality of chess play( quality player's rating ) go down , pushers'/time flaggers' rating goes up.

Overall rating should be zero sum (0) though. I dont agreed people lose about 100 rating in average.

This is an example of what I am talking about:

https://www.chess.com/live/game/2807534782

I got beaten in only 25 moves (one of the quickest losses I have ever had on this site). According to the chess.com engine, my opponent only made ONE inaccuracy in the ENTIRE GAME, no mistakes or blunders, and had a best move percentage of 63.6%!  For a player that is supposed to be around my rating, that is absolutely outrageous. I seriously think that my rating is too high.

I didn't feel as if I had a slightest chance of winning that game. It felt like I was playing a GM. No kidding.

As I said, no other chess site I go on feels like this. It's so frustrating to me, because this site has so many things that I love about it!

Well, at least you now have the option to play the computer if you want to, I hate to admit it, but probably the best way to play rapid on this site b/c no chance of cheating and an accurate rating. For bullet and blitz, though, definitely don't want to play the computer.

this reminds me of something joe walsh said about live performances and how bands “get better”

the crux of the matter was that it is not necessarily improving your peak performances but, actually, raising your worst performances closer to the level of your best

so true to chess and blitz (at least to me)

If I can recall correctly, I had a couple of 100% games (12 and 15 or 17 moves), where obviously my opponents didn't played their best games... but still we are talking for more than 10 moves. Also, I had opponents that made no mistakes, but just 1 or 2 inaccuracies and their rating was around 1000. I am not so sure, if anything like that points to cheating. It might be inconsistency or shared account? If they were cheating, I would expect a rating higher than 2200.

I think we have gone past the cheating issue. Or if they  are having a slump, or sharing an account, or their dog died or they are conjugating a verb with their partner; it is irrelevant. What is frustrating is being paired with a player about equal to your rating who plays like a 2400.

All of these reasons and issues are understandable; but playing game after game with players who can bang out GM moves is the issue. The OP is just looking for decent game.

Most, frustrating for me is the randomness, since I can't assess my performance. It happens to win game after game, going up in rating, while I am making blunders. Should I be happy and think that I have reached a new level in blitz strength?...  while my play didn't seem good at all and seemed that I was just lucky to get away with murder in most games?

Other times, I start to play super solid. No blunders or mistakes! But I lose game after game. I am going down in rating, but when I analyze my games, my play seems solid. What I should think then?... I usually just tilt and start making blunders, going even further down (justifiably now).

seems very random to me and you can only assess your performance in the long run (like poker)... but we are playing chess (scratches head)

Lost 20 points to this mug in Blitz Arena, yesterday. Reported to moderators and Quelle Surprise! no points refunded and nothing ever done, nor has there ever been! Then almost immediately after this game...

All his moves except the last 5, were "excellent" engine preferred moves, the only reason he played badly at the end, was because he had not enough remaining time to enter moves in the engine! Reported, along with so many others and nothing. Don't even know why I'm paying a monthly subscription to be cheated out of points and ignored by the staff.

1. ELO point refunded is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life. You took it way too serious.

2. ELO 840 cheated? For what? If he cheats, his rating would be 2000+ I mean, if rating reflects one's performance, are you telling me one of your friend cheats and A's all the time but still fail the class?

Avatar of Elkapan1

If you think someone rated 786 plays like that, you're a bigger mug than you sound mate. We're talking "how does horsey move, again?" type of rating. Not slamming off perfect engine moves in rapid succession.

Avatar of mini_VAN

Are you talking about the rating itself or the person playing the game? If you are talking about rating itself, then maybe yes, he cannot play that good. If you are talking about the person playing the game, you should watch this video. https://youtu.be/Ka5sh6hBvSI

Naming a person cheated violates the rule. If you are good enough to distinguish human moves and engine move, then you should not have the rating of 1400. Maybe 2000+

Your opponent was playing beginner move since move four. 4......Be6. It is pretty sad that you cant take advantage /punishment to your opponent.
