Some tips while playing in a board

I have a problem where I can see through plans easily online, but I only said "easily" because while playing in a board,I find a hard time seeing them. Before I played online I can do it but thats because I rarely played and though I play in competitions representing my school, the only thing I knew was the scholars mate. And so I played online to become better,which I did become better. But now I played in a board against my classmatefor the first time since last year,I did win,but that was because there were no decent players in our class. So do you guys have tips on how I can surmount this problem?
