They won't show up in Live if they are not actually in Live.

In Live Chess, the panel on the right hand side at the bottom has several tabs: the middle one is "Friends". If a friend is "Playing", clicking on that line will spectate that game; if a friend is "Online", clicking on that line will let you challenge them to a game
