Spectrum of Possibilities

People look for some secret trick... like reading books, or not reading books, or using an engine, or not using an engine etc.
They explain skill that's better than theirs as natural talent, or the person worked harder, or had the right coaches, etc.
The difference between Carlsen and 10 through 2 is not some conveniently packaged little trick we can point to like psychology. It's lots of little things. As Karpov said when he was asked (as world champ) what made him better, the world champion is a little bit better at everything: openings, endgames, tactics, strategy, calculation, imagination, sense of danger, risk taking, etc.
