food for thought-----playing unrated games on chess.com might be comparable to the preseason games in major sports; playing rated games could be like playing regular-season games in selfsame sports; and playing tournament games can be likened to the postseason games in said sports...just an interesting comparison I'd thought I'd share.
Good analogy. But as in pre-season games, which are hard fought, so are unrated. In my experience, unrated chess is a battle to the death, even without rating points on the line. Why? Because its a matter of pride.
