I've gotten the same thing. I don't think there's one good answer, maybe just the audience on the site.

I think sometimes people don't look at the text/chat boxes when they're playing. Particularly if they're playing blitz I think sometimes people just want to go on to their next game. In long games, I find it a little off-putting, but we are online, so I don't worry about it too much. I only play here and on ICC, where people are usually very cordial.

To be honest a lot of the time I don't notice messages in the chat box - they don't exactly jump out at you, especially if you're still looking at the board. Also, a lot of people might not know what 'gg' means :P
You may be playing the wrong people. I'm not trying to be a smarty pants, I really mean it. I'm part of a big group where we play each other and it's rare that my opponent says nothing. I'll always say something, even if just "thank you" and afterwards, I ALWAYS say thank you, no matter how the game went (or if the other player was rude). All I can say is please don't lose your good sportsmanship and continue to treat others kindly. Someone out there will appreciate it.

I've played chess on a lot of sites and on most of them, with the exception of chess.com, the players were in a habit of wishing the other player "gg" or "good game" after the match, even if they lost. It's like shaking hands afterwards.
Why is it that most players on this site, even if I wish them good game, just ignore it, don't respond, or are even surprised when say that?
