Spotting Checkmate Sequences In the Middlegame

Whilst on holiday, I played a good friend of mine. I had a very dominant position and was attacking. However, I missed 2 mate in 2s, and ended up losing on time. I have no trouble solving mate in 5 puzzles, but miss these oppurtunities in my game. In that game a spectator told me several moves later what I had missed. I was so annoyed that I blundered and lost the game. This really crushed my morale at the time. Any advice?

I'm sorry but I haven't recorded my games until very recently. This was just a game by the poolside on travel chess.
