Square Off - Chess Set

Anyone having trouble updating their board? I rarely get time to play so today I was excited to get the board out and give it a go.

I switched it on and connected and it took me to an automatic update page and said update will take two to three minutes. After many more minutes it’s still updating. So I deleted the app and uploaded it. Again after signing in and connecting it’s straight to the update page and here I sit for thirty minutes now not updating. I checked the reviews on the app and I’m not alone.

Anyway I can’t contact support via the app as it doesn’t allow me to go back. I’m stuck in the update page. I am close to throwing it out the door as I have had hardly a time when it doesn’t either update correctly or it doesn’t move the piece as it’s supposed to do. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Perhaps I may just send the whole dang thing back.

I see in your last response it did finally update. I am curious to know what maybe causing your issue as you say this has been an issue. I wonder if it is a router issue or your phone . I have an Android phone the new Motorola z3 and an unlimited data plan and always stay connected with 4g. I am wondering if perhaps your trying to update with Wi Fi to a router then the internet. or do you perhaps have an older Android or apple phone.

Hi Dennis I use iPhone X on the internet at home.  I always use wifi when I get home and not 4G even though I also have unlimited data. Maybe I'll try not using the router when I get home next time. 

I am kind of wondering if the download is interrupted by the router.  Recently you may have notice in the string above it was a router issue. Just a thought

 

 

I know in my case my router needs to be replaced it is very old. I have trouble playing on chess.com by wifi often losing my connection. My office is at the other end of the house so I just use my 4g internet but I have a tethering feature using my phone as a hot spot to my laptop.  The feature on my phone is another $30 a month but I have a property that I spend a lot of time at that has no internet is how I got started doing that so I just use it in my office since I need that feature when I travel anyway.

 

My router is 6 years old so I guess it needs replacing too. 

With the released of time controls I wonder if anyone is interested in starting a league for Square Off users.

It is great that they added time controls!! Now the fastest one I can see is 15+5. Yesterday somehow I accepted an invitation to play a 10min game and my opponent was getting 10 sec increments and I was not. I almost lost on time. Does any one have an idea how did that happened? Square off chat said they will get back to me..

Do you remember seeing 10+10 in the challenge or did you only see that you had 10 minutes when you were in the game?

I think there’s a bug when joining games.  If you cancel a challenge the same time your opponent accepts, he’ll end up in the game, but you won’t. I think there’s some other way of joining the game once it’s in progress.  Possibly by accepting another challenge.

The challenge I accepted showed 10m no increment and I wondered right away how that person was able to propose that since is not an option. LOL

 

Must’ve been an admin account.  I guess there’s some hidden features for testing.

i've had a square off set for several months. the set is reasonable. i understand it's a young company and development is difficult, however, without going into detail because there are too many issues to mention, the app is pathetic. there is no excuse for not recording games, seeing who you're playing, being able to see opponents profile. toggling between chess.com and square off will dump you out of one or the other. come on guys, make an effort. i get the pieces can't move quickly and need to be light. i get integration with other chess sites is tricky and possibly expensive for you, but your own functionality is not improving. are you going to do something or not? if not, i'll get rid off my set.

You sound like a spoiled little brat, no offense. I have had this set since the beginning. They make updates constantly. First it was just an idea. Then it got crowd funding and developed. Then they shipped the product. First you could only play against square off users. Then they developed the "analyze this" app (which records notation and allows you to use stockfish to analyze the games after). Then they integrated it with chess.com. Then they developed the watch live games feature (so you can watch the top chess GMs play on your square off set). They just recently added a leader board and rating system for square off user. I hear next they are designing a tournament mode of our users..... They have made an effort and then some. but it is a small team with limited funding. If you could do better job designing an app Martin, maybe you should go out and do something instead of rudely complaining about it over the internet.

hi jr, i wasn't aware the 'analyze this' app was there's, i thought it was a third party they had linked with. if it is there's i don't believe it's reasonable to ask us to buy the premium version. do you know it's there's?

i did air my concerns with square off to no avail. we all have our preferences so it may be personal. do you really think the basic functionality of the app is acceptable? i'd don't think it should be all singing all dancing, in fact i don't think they should be providing some of the functions they are before the app is in better shape. just my opinion.

as a reference point, what's your opinion of the chess.com app?

ps why would a red cross on the bottom right of the 'play with friends' screen be the button to press to play a game on chess.com?

why not alter that to the chess.com logo or the like before developing new features?

the person who did that would probably do it for free.
