Anyone know what the difference is between the 2019 edition of the square off board (sold by amazon) and the previous version?

All it says on Amazon is “new and improved 2019 edition”.

Perhaps the improvement concerns the app.

I believe i just received the 2019 edition. The pieces are different, and the board runs very very smoothly. Other than that, I have not noticed any differences.

hi jr, i wasn't aware the 'analyze this' app was there's, i thought it was a third party they had linked with. if it is there's i don't believe it's reasonable to ask us to buy the premium version. do you know it's there's?

i did air my concerns with square off to no avail. we all have our preferences so it may be personal. do you really think the basic functionality of the app is acceptable? i'd don't think it should be all singing all dancing, in fact i don't think they should be providing some of the functions they are before the app is in better shape. just my opinion.

as a reference point, what's your opinion of the chess.com app?

Hello Martin, excuse me for being rash earlier. I do believe the square off team paid to have the analyze this app made just for the app. I use it all the time though. It is the only chess app i found that can import games from my archived emails properly to the app (without being able to copy and paste the pgn). It was like two bucks bud.... If it was apple or android (or some other big corporation) i am sure everyone wouldn't think twice about buying it but because it is a small business everyone expects it should be done for free lol arg. Support small business. Support chess. two bucks is not unreasonable.

Of course there are improvements in the app i would like to see though. The biggest one is having weekly/daily tournaments for square off users. I believe the square off team is working on this now. It would also be nice to see the ratings of players on chess.com and square off before sending a challenge but these are very minor concerns... The fact that I can play OTB chess anytime, anywhere is what I LOVE ABOUT THIS SET! It was worth every single penny and then some.

i came across as more critical than i would've liked. they've done a good job with a very tricky product from scratch. i just think they're letting themselves down with the easier bit. i think they have the tech to improve the product a lot with perhaps less effort and money than one would think. i may be wrong on the money front but i think i'm correct regarding the functionality. looking forward to a game joseph.

Looks like we have already played each other in a 10 minute match on chess.com back in 2017 lol you won -_-

What is your username on square off so i can be sure to add you to my favorites list and we can play sometime soon

All Square Off needed to do is integrate with a popular chess website.  And it’s already accomplished that.  The Square Off app will get better and it has since I’ve owned it over the last 2 months.

Personally, I think the Square Off app should be very simple.  I think we could use a chat in the game lobby for organizing games.  A random button for selecting sides.  A share button instead of analyze would be better.  Let us decide what app to store/analyze our games.  Chess Studio for iOS and SCID on the go for Android seem best to me.  Analyze This is a good free option on iOS though.

A Square Off version of slowchessleague.com could be a major selling point.  In app solves the problem of organzing users, but a web presence would attract more.  This is more of a community thing though.

What is the 2019 edition of the board? Is that an official release?

I asked SquareOff support and they said the 2019 edition consists of improvements made based on the customer feedback they recieved. They said the updated version is what a customer that buys the board today will receive.

Since they didn't specify what the improvements are I figured I'd ask on this forum. jr87 was kind enough to respond in post #568.

@jr87 I'd be interested in hearing more about the differences. Is the board quieter, or faster to move? When you say the pieces are different, what has been altered?

Yes, this is absolutely true - if you never have seen a DGT e-board.

Avatar of Dennis_Petersen

period because Eric=Cesar you don't have to look at your computer screen to seen a move made by your opponent and you don't have to move your opponents piece. It is full fledged OTB experience. DGT cannot match that. happy.png

When I play on my DGT e-board I never look at my computer screen. A voice just tells me what move my opponent has played. In the language of your choice, such as English, German, French, Spanish or Dutch.

And I can move on the e-board in the same way as on a regular chessboard, either by sliding a piece from one square to another, or by picking up the piece and put it on its destination square. So I'm not bothered with SquareOff's strange move procedure where you first have to press the original square and then the target square.

And I don't have to put on my special glasses to see the tiny SquareOff pieces, but can use my normal tournament size DGT pieces. happy.png

Oh look the troll is back. Cool. We get it Eric. You like moving both sides pieces. No one cares though. That's not otb if you have to move both sides pieces. Might as well save a thousand bucks and just call someone up on the phone and play on a standard chess board, in my opinion. Square off moves the pieces for you. There is no comparison. Either way though stop trolling. You add nothing to this discussion but ignorance and ugliness... Go away troll. Do something productive with your life instead trolling chess forums for arguments.

I know I have had many high end chess computers. My full size Excaliber grandmaster with regular size pieces and played more human like than any other at the time had a voice also I still had to move the opponents piece. It is plain and simple distracting and not a real OTB experience. The sensory surface of a square off is super sensitive reqireing almost no pressure. I never pice a piece up and press down . I apply a slight pressure when youching the pieces and move. I actually find the size of the square off is fine . It sets on my chess table which I rarely use. Not everyone has the room for either anyway, so an even smaller square off makes sense. I don't have to reset the board when I am done with a game DGT dosn't do that either, call me lazy, I would rather go for a soda while square off does it for me. Every one to his own. If you have a $1000 for a DGT by the time you st a set that's worth $100 go for it.

When I was a kid I also liked to play with little electric trains and litte cars that were able to move all by themselves. So I understand your enthousiasm about the SquareOff. It is certainly a very nice toy.
