Hello,

Question:

I have have had two games playing against someone(10 min) and I had most all my pieces and they had a pawn and a king. I was closing in to Check Mate and the game was declared a stalemate. I suck at chess and need every win I can get!! Is there a bug or a secret "bailout" these people are doing to cause this? Thank you! I went to "help" at chess.com" andhave receives and answer...

Every turn, a player has to be able to make a legal move. The case of checkmate is when a player is in check and has no legal moves to get out of check.

If you make a move, leaving your opponent with no legal moves and they are not in check, then that is stalemate and it's a draw.

I saw your game and black’s king had nowhere to go, and his pawn was blocked by your pawn

I suck at chess and need every vicotry I can get. I was crushing these guys (rare event). This game of chess is addictive but has some low-lows...

Winning has nothing to do with your chess performance in the game. You obviously outplayed your opponent and made a simple mistake that gave them a draw. Don’t focus on winning and losing, focus on the quality of your play.

It is not a stupid question my friend. It is a sensible one.

Chess has many facets, and one of them is the stalemate rule. It means that even when you have an overwhelming advantage over you opponent, you can fail to win if you leave your opponent with no legal move.  When your opponent is down to just a king or a K+ a few pieces you must think even more carefully about your next one.

Don't get bogged down with openings. Learn some basic endgame knowlege, and above all do tactic tests every day. Tactics are your way to improve.   https://chesstempo.com/chess-tactics/

Now you know how important it is to check every possibility before making your move. Be more thorough. Often learning the hard way makes a more lasting impression than just reading advice or learning some maxim.
