the point is you report it, chess.com makes that call & the site is a better place for every person they bust for poor sportsmanship.
Stalling/quitting games… I just sat here and waited for someone to let the clock run out…
When I played on ICC I used to set 'autoflag' to off so when their clock reached 0:00 after making me sit there for 5mins with a won game, it just kept going into minus...then I made THEM wait 10mins or whatever it was...
It may appear slightly petty but it was very satisfying

false--this can be researched:
if they have a pattern of sitting there stalling for 5 minutes to avoid an immediate mate & then moving with 3 seconds left, it's obvious what they are doing & the moderators will act appropriately with somebody that is deliberately breaking the site rules.

did i say banned?
cryptic stance you're taking there:
it's common sense... follow the rules.
does this behavior seem acceptable to you?

there isn't a valid reason to stall in a dead-lost position & the reason it's against the rules is that it wastes other peoples' time.
it's certainly not throwing a fit or 'crying' to expect others to follow the site rules... i'd rather take the win without having to wait out somebody's poor sportsmanship & i'm sure the vast majority of the members here would agree with me on this point.

Hi all,
If you get people stalling please report them with game links etc,

Thanks

Hey guys, thank you for the feedback on here. As you've mentioned, it is tough to detect stalling because someone really could have been kidnapped by a fantasy creature with a lisp, or they couldn't gotten an important call. We never know in any individual case if it is stalling or just something going on in life or a disconnect. But, it's not like we don't have things in place to measure these disconnects and take action when someone is stalling repeatedly. A pattern of behavior we CAN detect. If you guys have any ideas for better ways for us to detect this or a suggested punishment for those who do, write them here and I will review! Please try to remember that you too may need to leave a game due to a disconnect or life circumstance, and keep that balanced in your suggestions!

people having valid reasons is not a valid argument. chesscom takes no action unless someone is a serial staller. perhaps people are more prone to alien abduction every time they blunder a piece into a losing position, though. one never really knows the motives of aliens

One great suggestion would be to make it so the stalling timeout timer is different based on the material balance. If your down 4 or 5 points of material, then you have lest time before the game will close you out as abandoned. Things like that we can implement and lower the percentage of stallers on the site!
it's not crying to expect everybody to follow the rules & stop wasting peoples' time... we're discussing the case of players who are obviously & intentionally stalling in a lost position.
