Dear chess community,

I am happy to leak the tentative plan of stockfish 10 release in Nov 2, 2018. It will be exactly 10th year Anniversary of this awesome engine.

Stockfish 10 will be +50 elo stronger than stockfish 9.

Cheers,

Nay

Stockfish 9 is ridiculously strong. Stockfish 10 is going to be "please God, make it stop hurting me!"

Well, if you feel like consumer hardware stockfish(4 cores CPU) is very strong, you will be amazed by these Stockfishs in TCEC.

(1 cores= 2 threads by HT)

1. 44 threads SF(currently playing )

2. 88 threads SF ( doing live analysis)

3. 386 threads SF ( did a few show matches a few months ago, I posted some of those games in this forum)

4. 1000 threads SF (MPI network SF)

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

i really don't even if i own this stockfish 10.am humbled by stockfish 8,belittled by stockfish 9 both of which I have failed to beat in hand cup matches... I really don't find any reason of why engine s should keep getting stronger and stronger for human consumption.. humans can beat them or replicate them..even the greatest chess player can beat the little 5mb stockfish 8..

Doggone.. I'll have to try this engine when it debuts. Granted, Stockfish 8 is probably strong enough for anyone already.

One thing these super strong computers have done is demonstrate just how bad even top level human chess is. Back in the '60s, '70s and '80s people seemed to think the best humans at their best were playing near flawless chess. Now we know a computer can give any human odds and still beat them. Put that 1,000 core beastie up against Carlsen or Kasparov at pawn and two move odds and my money will be on Stockfish!

Additional info.

Why Stockfish is so strong. It is simple, more than 1 billion games have been tested, 30,000+ patches, and

1400 years of CPU years of computing power have been used.( It means if you run 1 ghz cpu for 1 core computer, you will need 1400 years to complete these tests).

For estimate of electricity usage alone( not to mention hardware cost and human resources), I estimated that $ 4,000,000( 4 million have been spent in Stockfish project).( I estimate 1 core computer , 60 W, cost- 10 cents per day)

P.S Houbert Houdart(Houdini developer) said, he wont be competing SF anymore.I think,  if he want to compete SF , he will need to spend at least 1 million dollar, but chess community is very small, and you cant expect millions of copies sale from chess engine. happy.png

I agree we don't need stronger chess engines to challenge us. But, if you analyze your games using a chess engine, it helps to see where you made mistakes and the best chess engines should show you the best moves you should have made instead.

I wish they would tell you things like, "Castling Queenside and launching a Pawn Storm was wrong. You should have posted your Knight on that nice outpost at c5 and then attacked up the middle with your d, e, and f Pawns."

But you can often get the hint from a good chess engine when, for example, it recommends Nc5 as your best move 3 moves in a row during post-game analysis.

Well, if you are a glutton for punishment, asmFish is already available - a rewrite of the current Stockfish in x86-64 assembler instead of C, which is therefore faster, and stronger as a result.

Stockfish is certainly a vindication of the open source software model. I've heard people over the years take the stance that anything developed by a bunch of jobless nerds coding in their parents basements, and not by real commercial software companies, can't possibly measure up. But no one can argue with all the 1 1 1 1 1 1s Stockfish puts in the win column.

How would 4 cores CPU Stockfish 9 fare against Magnus Carlsen in a 12-games classical chess match?

I estimate that 7.5-4.5 would be a good score for the computer.

That would not be a good score for the computer actually. I would guess 11-1. Maybe even 12-0.

Back in 2011 before Carlsen's first match with Anand, a reporter asked Carlsen if he plays against engines. (When engines were comparatively much much weaker)

Carlsen responded "I don't play against engines because I like winning my games"

Yeah, I certainly couldn't imagine Carlsen winning any. If he played good anti-computer chess, I I'd guesstimate three drawn and nine losses for 1.5 to 10.5.

Will they have a Macintosh version of Stockfish 10? Chess Openings Wizard could use a stronger engine.
