Strange Game

Here is a game I just played.  Occasionally, I get one like this.  I have the feeling my opponent is much better than his rating and is just toying with me.  He makes a lot of moves which are clearly bad, but proving it will require accuracy, then he fights his way back with a lot of complications until I miss the best path.  Towards the end I am in time trouble, and he has a lot of time, which also makes me think he's toying with me.  I guess that's OK but why do it?  Or am I just wrong?

Note also that he is pretty clearly not using an engine...he makes mistakes too...but if he would just play a bit straightforwardly I think he'd crush me with no drama...so why not do it?
