Typically, if you have two pieces of the same type that can move to the same square, then you have to use either the rank or the file to specify which piece is making the move.
This could happen with knights, rooks, queens (after promotion), or bishops (after promotion).
Hi all,
I was playing a game the other day and it came up with something like 28.3xd4. I understand what xd4 means and everything but what does the three on the front mean? And then on another game it came up with 1xd4. Does it only happen with knights? I am not new to chess but it would help if someone explained this to me.
Thanks
