Strategies to consolidate chess practice

So the last days I've been practicing chess till I'm tired out and can't see any position anymore, so to speak. Then I wondered, is there any method to help process and consolidate the new learning experience well? Of course getting good rest is a proven method, as well as briefly reviewing the learning before going to sleep. But perhaps it would also work to do something completely different than chess, like sports. Do you have any strategies for that? And do you think it can 'work' on the short-term?
