Does anyone know where I can find self-paced training/practice in long-term strategy as opposed to tactics?  Thanks in advance :)

Other than strategy books, learn about pawn structures and endgames.

Which books are best for you depends on your level.

If you're too new, then a lot of it wont seem very reliable until you can play most of your games without any big blunders.

For example, a book may give an example where white has a better placed rook and knight. The book might point out that to avoid it, black would have to accept too many weak pawns. But if the idea of losing a pawn or two at some undetermined point in the future doesn't seem like a big deal, then the ideas in the book won't seem very reliable to you.

Thank you!  I understand the basics.  What I'm looking for is how to decide on a strategy.  I know I should look for weaknesses, but I can't figure out how to build a long-term strategy to capitalize on them.  Do you have any book suggestions?

The book that always comes to mind is Pawn Structure Chess by Soltis or Modern Chess Strategy by Pachman, and of course knowing some endgames.

I don't know what will work best, this is just my suggestion :)

There is a book called Chess Structures, by Mauricio Flores Rios. This will put you on the fast track to knowledge of pawn structures of all major openings and what to play for. Strategies are discussed. Multiple complete games are given for each structure.

Well depending on your opening you play it often has a strategy in it.

Usually every opening has a long term one.
