Um, 1800 engines are dumbed down, to the point that they play like a 2400 half of the time and like a 1200 the other half of the time. That makes them much easier to beat than normal 1800s, in that you can in theory score 50% against them when they don't blunder if you're 1800, but they will also blunder frequently playing like a 1200 for half of every game.

no buddy i dont think so. the engine rarely makes any mistakes or inaccuracies. where did u even get that dumbed down engine idea? it is rated at 1800 and that is it.

From various trustworthy members of Chess.com whose accounts will stay open longer than all of yours combined.

sorry cant hear u over all the butthurt feelings ur beaming out oh sorry.

I have been trying for around 9, 10 months to achieve an 1800 rating in classical chess, yet i am stuck in the 1700s.

Getting stuck at a rating for a while is normal even if you've been trying to improve. Although if you haven't been able to move your rating after a year you should consider trying new training methods. Usually focusing on a weak area or doing that thing you "don't like." Maybe that's endgames, or playing sharp openings, or playing faster or slower, or something else.

What is the difference between a player with my rating and an 1800 player?

There are lots of ways to gain 100 points especially when you're not a GM, so every individual is different. The general areas are openings, endgames, strategy, tactics, and annotated game collections. I recommend getting a classic or otherwise widely recommended book on one of those, and then spending a few hour a day (every day) going over it. Usually your weakest area is something you've avoided studying because it's "boring" or "difficult" or something like this. Once you're stuck, improving usually means stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Swagmeister123 wrote:
How did you players reading this achieve it?

Played in tournaments, reviewed games with an engine, reviewed my openings against a reference (chessbase), read books. With books I would usually read it twice. First time somewhat quickly, and taking some notes, 2nd time to review areas I found difficult and/or interesting. I've only read a few books like this, but each time I noticeably improved. Read every page and play over all the analysis.

I also solved a lot of tactics, out of a book, visualizing the entire solution to the end before checking if my answer was correct. (I tend to look down on online tactics which let you see the pieces move as you're doing the tactic).

Reviewing books titles, chapter overviews, headlines and the like beforehand and looking for difficult and easy spots is studying like a pro. Anyone looking to study books better and getting information out of them this is it. I read slowly meaning part by part and having a long term plan of getting better. With that being said I believe higher levels of learning may require more time or practice to implement.

thanks for the good advice mate a lot of you guys have been recommending books, i bought a couple recently I'll get to reading them and see if that helps. On the bright side I have been able to beat 1800 opponents more often as of late so perhaps I'm not too far from my goal.

I can guarantee you this...NO ONE, and i mean NO ONE is "jelly" that you claim to beat an unnamed engine at an "alleged" 1800 level.  IF someone is "jelly" of that, then that is someone whos opinion does not matter.

If i reacted negatively everytime someone attempted to insult me online, or offline, i would spend the majority of my life butt-hurt.  I choose not to.

I think chess engine rating doesn't mean too much, i once played again 1900 rating engine and just to let you know, the engine is weak, it makes many mistakes.. and when you fight against 1900 human , you will see the big difference.. i have experienced it by myself, about your problem.. just focus on tactics and remember.. "DON'T MAKE UNREASONABLE MOVE", always ask yourself why did you play that move? and be sure you have the answer, i sure am that you will achieve 1800 rating even more.. sorry for using capital, i just want to make it strict.. thanks

the engines here rarely make mistakes, perhaps u faced one on a crappy site or something, as chesss.com doesnt have a 1900 engine option.

No, i'm not talking about chess.com engine, i'm talking about another computer chess program.. well, i don't have to say what program it is. But that program sure is good on analyzing and that isn't crappy program.. the point is that every engine has different skill even at the same rating..

But that doesnt make sense different same rating is same skill, different rating is different skill, thats what ratings are for.

No need to apologize.  Its easy to "go off" when youre not having a face to face discussion.  It goes with the online territory :-)

Its nothing tragic, its just that some here do not agree with your assessment of your playing strength.  But like i said, good luck in your first tournament, and keep us updated.  Remember...no matter the result.  HAVE FUN! and learn.

I do not know how things are now where you are, but when I went through this (many decades ago), the system was that a rating would be regarded as "provisional" (potentially very inaccurate) until one had played a large number of "rated" games. I do not remember the precise required number, but I think it was somewhere around twenty.

That was a blitz game, but it shows what you have to learn not to do to reach 1800.

blitz games are nothing man, i dont usually play online anyways, i usually play against an engine for several hours a day.

Blitz is too fast. I dont like internet long chess because I get bored. Long chess is better otb when you can walk around at look at the other tables.

Bt what about rapid? Rapid is fine on internet, partially  better than otb because we get automatic notations.

agreed rapid is currently my fav online ive been starting to play it a bit more often, but i still prefer the engine over all but thats just me.

An engine can give you almost the best answers all the time. I have not played much against engines because I can't take losing all the time. Thats a bit depressing. A fine thing with real people  is that they play different from each other, and they do make inaccuracies. Its interesting to find and highlight those inaccuracies and punish them. Finding weaknesses and attacking are central things in chess.

1800 is not perfect play. En engine should at least perform at 2400, and if given enough time 3000+. If an engine is only 1800, there something wrong with it.

Has there been much testing of engine performance at long time controls? I'm thinking of the Valvo-Deep Thought games, but, of course, that was a long time ago.

I really wish yo a fine tournament. And I wish you strong opponents that does analyze the games after the match with you.   I was extremely lucky in Konnerud Grand Prix 2016. The tournament crashed wit christmasshopping and very few players came.  Only 12, so they merged the A,B and C -class into one field.  I met really strong players. Trond Støre, rated 2072 won our game, and after that we analyzed for 90 minutes. Very interesting, and I really learned a lot.   I also lost to the super girl , 6 or 7 year old Lykke Merlot Helliesen. She so little that I wanted analyze help from a more adult player. I asked IM Johan Sebastian Christiansen, and he helped us.  Those analyze-sessions were among my finest chess experiences, and I felt like 150 rating points more wise after this tournament. I haven't been able to cash in those points yet, because of blundering, but maybe I will soon.  happy.png
