Study more or Play more?

Does a gap between blitz and standard really indicate a deficiency in tactics? My standard is 1400 and my blitz is 800.. but my chesstempo tactics rating is 1800 and only improving. So I'm not sure if it's that simple.

No, I don't think it indicates a tactics deficiency.

I hate to admit it, but studying tactics got me very few points between blitz rating 1150-1350. I'm sure in longer games they would have helped more, but in blitz where I thought the tactics would dominate, even doing tons of tactics didn't raise my rating above 1150 when I was there.

I know a lot of folks say don't study the opening if you're under 1800, etc., but that's not true, I'm finding. If you don't have good lines you know pretty well, even with strong tactics, you'll have nary a single tactical shot since the positional elements will be so bad in your on-the-fly setups.

Chess mentor definatly overrates you by quite a bit

May I suggest that you should be playing at least 1500 rated players, or as high as you can find someone to play a game with you.

You will learn very little from playing low ranked players, so that is a waste of time.  At this point you won't learn anything if you beat a low rated player.

Bad advice. Study more and play more slow and quit playing fast.

DrSpudnik

Play more, but pay attention to what you did, so you can go over it later to see if you messed up or did it right.

Almost everyone I asked is suggesting me to buy a book! Problem is I don't have a credit card or amazon to buy your suggested books (since I'm only 14) and I live in Philippines so buying your suggested books isn't really going to help me not unless you are from Philippines and you know where I can go to buy one from like say a local bookstore, National Bookstore, so yeah, thanks by the way guys.

I can't believe all this time I have been playing blitz and incorporating the openings, strategies, tactics I studied for the most part in 10 - 5 minutes game, with that in mind,

I am curious, is that the reason why applying solid openings, tactics, startegies in "fast/blitz" games that is meant for standard ones is in fact effective and hence the significant large increase in my blitz record?

Also, I would like to know what would be the effects or benefits (pros and cons) I can take from effectively playing blitz for the most part and switching back to standard ones? (like what can I get from playing fast and applying that to standard ones where I have more space to think and all that.)

My long hours of downtime study of chess fundamentals, tactics, games etc. still compensates for that (beating low rated players).

Seems to make sense to me. In the beginning you need to learn all the basics, and work a lot on your board vision and calculation during games. Learning e.g. R+K vs lone king mate can be done fairly quickly. Not hanging pieces takes a lot of practice.

But what if I am a conscious beginner who likes to keep his "record" clean and avoids lose. Should I still follow that principle?

Wheelspawn

Try observational learning by watching people play. Load up some five minute blitz tournament videos and just watch chessmasters play game after game after game. Do that until you can close your eyes and see chess pieces moving around.

But why are you taking my word for it? I can't even remember if the knight goes on the left side or the right side or if the rook can move one space on the first turn or two. It wasn't my choice to have my hippocampus damaged. Stupid lasers.

DrSpudnik

Stupid  hippo!

Pulpofeira

Indeed. Forget about that "record", is pointless.

How's going, Boring? That new username looks too big for you, I'd say.

I'd like you were close enough, really. Then, we would see...

Play three months than make one month or two brake. In that month dont play any games in live and correspondance. Take a look at your oppenings, make analyze with pc find some new ideas what you can make better. After that learn new oppenings whatch some youtube channels how are playing in difference oppenings. Than learn about tactics, center controll, difficult attacks and so on. And after that month come back and play first llive standart and make moves resposibly not fast like others just at evry move think deep and search for other better move like combos or else. after 100 games or more in live standart play blitz 5 mins games and than play bullet after that keep playing live standart blitz bullet and you see how your rating increase. At leats that strategy than making a btake helps a lot for me personally.

SnowFate

oh i forgot to mention after brake up than you back practice at playing blindfold its really helping
