If you want to get to and past 1300, try The Amateur's Mind by Jeremy Silman (Book). That book contains by far the best chess instruction you will get without having a private coach... It took me from 1100 to 1375 in four weeks/3 1/2 chapters. And I've got a lot more to go!

Will definately read that :D. I read Silman's endgame book, it helped very much. Hopefully, The Amateur's Mind will help a lot also.

Get a diamond membership on here and do 100 tactics problems each day every day for a month.
And don't waste time with thoughts like, "yeah, but I can do them free at a different site or blah, blah"
Those kinds of things will just distract you from your goal.
But, get a diamond membership here, do 100 tactics each day for a month and by day 32, you will be 1300.

@Marie
You are a good judge of character.
@King,
Seriously though, 100 tactics a day for a month and your rating will go up a hundred points easily.

:D I know, I really need to start doing those. Will start doimg them tomorrow!

I have only been playing chess for 5 months - so probably not the best person to give advice, but I do have a rating of mid-1500 on other sites where I have played 100's of games. My 4 games here I think I am around 1380 or so, but the game pool size is so low who really cares.
What I did (after I learned how the stupid peices moved and basic fundementals) was:
1: Develope an opening reprotoure for white - this took longer than I tought, but Sam Colins has a great DVD on the subject and it helped out alot - The thing to remember is you are going to play this opening reproture for a long time- make sure it is fun for you. I do not know every line of my openings, but only the ones I play - the idea is to get into a position that is playable, at our level being +/_ .85 makes no difference.
2) Do the same thing for black - For black I decided to play "System" to reduce the learning curve - Caro-Kann and 1...Nf3, 2...e1 ( probably has a name but I don't know it.
3) Stop thinking about openings from that moment on - (it is ok to improve your knowledge of the opening from time to time, but do not attempt to learn any new openings) Instead read: The Ametures Mind (great book) And then when done with that book, read another book on stratgey - and then another, and then another. Get the idea.
4) Tactics: 30 min everyday no matter what else you do with chess - committ to 30 min every day on tactics - I bought tatic software, I found this site way to late :( - I will start tring this sites tatics trainer soon.
5) End Game Therory: Alot of new players (at least from what I can see) spend a lot of time on opening therory. And have no idea about end game therory. End Game thorey does not change according to what people think is cool and hip - it is constant, know how to finish a game.
I truely believe that at our tiny levels (mine and yours, not the good players here) that we can salavage most games in the middle game and end game, and over come that .85 weakness in our opening lines.
Pawn structures, tatics and stratedgy ---- study, study , study.
Well I said it three times - I better go do it now, off to the books ;)

I find it confusing that I have never really studied any endgame theory whatsoever and have learned the endgames by simply playing a lot of chess... But yeah I have played at least 10 000 games which means quite a lot endgame positions :)

10,000 games - that is alot of expereince!!!
You are probably right, you can learn most end game therory from trial and error. On the same hand, how many of those 10,000 games did you lose - esspecially early - after playing well the whole game?
Nothing is more upsetting than playing a good game, and then finding your self in a losing position once the board is simplified.
For me it only made since to understand how to close a game - fastest way to more elo - but just my opinion.

Hi!
I'm looking to get my game better, get back into 1300's.....Took a 3months break and I'm back.
So I'm looking for some study partners/play and then analyze....Learn some openings with each other, help each other out.
Let me know if you'd be interested...Also any tips on what I should do to get into the 1300s?
