 The Russians always sent KGB agents to accompany the players. Bronstein says in his book "Secret Notes" That  Grandmaster Bondarevsky was one of the KGB agents that went to the Zurich 1953 tournament. Bronstein says one of the KGB guys told one of the Russian players who questioned why he must draw with Smyslov---"do you think we came here to play chess"?

I hadn't heard that but I am not surprised- in the old USSR EVERYTHING was political. I like Bronstein, he has a sense of humor in his chess writings.
