Hi Everyone, I was pretty good player in my teens but took several decades away from playing then started then stopped etc (as I was not as good, which was to be expected but that’s me very competitive with myself)

Anyway back at present and hopefully with new mindset, so now been about 32 years since my peak.

I have a puzzle rating twice as high as my game rating, based on this where would you say I need to practice/learn/read etc?

Thank you

Welcome back to the world of chess I hope you will find that the various forms of chess and wide variety of people playing will bring you some enjoyment even if tempered by a little pain.

You will need discipline to (re)develop the skills necessary to succeed again at chess and to prevent the one bad move nullifying the previous forty good ones [ thanks Steinitz ] .

I think a good start would be to go over a handful of openings well annotated by masters . Play white and black and get a least familiar with some pitfalls of each - it may also prevent picking up bad habits from playing weaker players.

Then try out your new found or rediscovered knowledge in a game or tournament (themed - so a known opening) and see how quickly in a few moves the wood becomes a forest. Good luck and enjoy the ride.
