regular chess player, or an expert or above!  I am enrolled in chess school, and this setup was presented to  me, to sit in and take over blacks game. the only info I was given was, "black to play".  I will post the answer after I let those that would like to have a try at it first.  I think "heinzie" my Norwegian friend will get this!  Oh we have alarge Norwegian community here, The Sons  of Norway, some of the best people I have ever met and the food traditional just yummy!!

ivandh

Pretty sure Heinzie is from the Netherlands

Just a wild guess: ...Qxh2+ Kf2 Ng4+!? fxg4 fxg4+ Nf4 Nxd4, I think threatening ...Qxg2# due to the pin on the f file, and I think ...g3 would be mate too, so that looks good as his king can't really run away.

Hmm, maybe I got lucky, I basically just looked at the most aggressive moves, and hoped one would work. The king has few squares to go, so it just takes a few threats, using some tactical motifs like pins to force the mate for good. Actually, after ...Nxd4, I guess white could try to move his queen to clear e1. If something like Qc1, I'm not sure what black would play, maybe just ...Qxg2+ Ke1 Nf3+ Rxf3 Qxf3 with what seems to be a nice material advantage, unless I'm missing a forced mate.

JJBooy

What about 1...Qxh2+ 2.Kf2,Qh4+ 4.Kg1,Bh2+ 5.Kh1,Bg3+ 6.Kh1,Qh2#

ivandh

Problem with threatening Qxg2 is white can simply push the e-pawn and cut off that diagonal.

I like 1... Ng4 2. fxg4 fxg4

Elubas

@ivandh: Yes but the main point is ...g3 is also mate; if white plays e4 after I threaten ...Qxg2 then after g3 I think all of white's squares are covered (d4 knight controls both f3 and e2)

Edit: oh wait, I'm sorry, after e4 e3 would be a new square for the king.

ivandh

Ah, I forgot e2 was covered.

Elubas

Well actually e4 would hang the f4 knight, think that would be the problem.

I keep finding new things in this position, but for now my line looks good.

Elubas

I would actually disagree about it being so forcing JG. It gives white many options, even h3, right away or even after accpeting.

JG27Pyth

Both Q and B checks are attractive but I think I play Ng4 which either gets an exclam or a ? I don't know which... it is forcing and it just opens up the Kingside to all the rest of Black's pieces after fxg4 Qxh7+ Kf2 fxg4+ then I guess he blocks with his N then our Nxe4 setting up mate with Qxg2... but I have NOT calculated this with an engine or even used an analysis board... so god knows if that variation is right... but I think OTB I play Ng4 if I'm feeling brave.

*** edit... oh hell he can decline with h3! never mind...

I want it to be harder than just Bxh2+ but I think that wins... is there a defense?

Yeah this is a solve I believe (I left out the Kh1 line cuz it's obvious)  Bxh2+ Kf2 Qh4+ (Ng3 Bxg3+ mate to follow) g3 Bxg3+ Nxg3 Qh2# -- but OTB I would have played Ng4 and screwed myself. LOL.

Elubas

lol, I think I edited my post accidentally instead of posting a new one, so that looks kind of weird.

So anyway, after 5 Qc1 I'm looking at 5...Rxf4+ (or possibly ...Qxg2 first, though then ...Rxf4 isn't with check) 6 exf4 Bxf4, with simply a ton of firepower but who knows if it forces mate.

@JG lol, I think you may have found it. Much simpler way to use ...Ng4+! After simply Kf2 Ng4+ fxg4 fxg4+ Nf4, g3 is mate right?

Well I like to give the answer, even though Heinzie has not had his chance, but maybe he will not read this first and give it his best shot!? Oh, Heinzie is not from Norway, but Netherlands, oopsEmbarassed never the less he is still a great person here!

There is much to learn in this game, and I was humbled, because I thought I got it for sure, after winning the queen, and it is easy to do, I was allowed to finsih the games and  I won, was so proud , then the bad news, I missed it! The moral here is not to win pieces but think like an expert and go for the mate asap.

Ans.   1...........Bxh2+

         2.Kf2         Ng4+

         3.fxg4        fxg4+

         4.Bf5          Rxf5

         5.Nf4          g3mate

Well I hope you found this contructive, I did, and I have alot to learn!!!!Laughing

I think the Ng3 Bxg3 line gives white quite a bit of rope.

GhostNight

JG27Pyth, If 1.Bxh2+.............Kf2, 2.Ng3............Bxg3, Then Ke2 escapes mate and loses queen thats what I did, lolo

Vulpesvictor

All this Qxh2 stuff is really good, seriously, BUT IT'S WHITE TO MOVE!

TheGrobe

Sure, but there is a forced mate.

heinzie

Yes, who doesn't love Norway. They have Carlsen and tuna and fjords and Björn Borg and Abba. And other awesome stuff like that. Thanks for the Internet praise in any case :p I feel genuinely honoured by this thread. About the puzzle. I don't know but I am certain I would play B:h2+. Check's a check!! And then Ng4+ is sneaky. Wasn't the first thing I looked at, but it keeps following the checking advice. Very nice. Checkmate, shake hands. Grin. Yay! You won. Isn't chess nice. Very very nice

Elubas

I'm actually pretty disappointed. The qxh2 line was nice and fun, but the actual solution was much simpler than it at first seemed. They say you're supposed to analyze one candidate move at a time, so I did, but unfortunately the qxh2 line kept having more and more complications so I never moved on to anything else. I thought a puzzle would want you to open up your pieces brutally, with moves like ...Nxd4.
