Tactics and pattern recognition

Hi everyone. I am using Chessimo to train in tactics. Problems that I have solved periodically come up again and I can recognize many of the solutions instantly through pattern recognition.  As these reoccurring problems come up should I spend the time to ‘think the problem through’ (assessing the board as if it were my first time encountering the problem) or should I solve the tactic as fast as possible if I recognize the answer through a memorized pattern?

The more you practice visualizing the board the better your visualization gets. That you recognize the solution is great, but take the time to visualize the position at the end of the entire sequence, not just move by move.

The whole idea of tactics trainer is to memorize patterns so that you can spot the tactics quicker.

If you recognize a pattern and see that it is winning, by all means, play it. However if you just play a certain pattern withought seeing if it actually works it's just guessing, which is bad.

You should still "solve" every problem that comes up. If recognizing the major pattern(s) makes it easier then all the better -- but don't just skip to the next one without going through the major lines, defenses, etc. as this will just lead to sloppy thinking.
