Tactics Rating

I have seen so many people with tactics rating much higher than their playing rating. I do not believe I am terrible at tactics, but my tactics rating is pretty much in line with my blitz rating.

Am I missing someting about solving tactics that I should be aware of, which could help me improve my tactics calculations? Or is it just that most people on this sight are great at doing tactics?

The "rating pool" is different so you would expect there to be some differences.

I'm pretty bad at blitz and I mostly use my time on tactics. For me, my tactics rating is much closer to my online/daily/correspondence rating. But the main thing is that in a TT situation, I know there is something there but in a live game, I  may not be able to see available tactics quickly enough or if I do see them and get an advantage, may not be able to finish the game in  time or will end up blundering under time pressure.

I don't use tactics trainer here, tactics rating is abit inflated here due to rating pool. I remember my friend was like 2.6k tactics. If anything live chess ratings are more indicative of the general range of your skill level.

Tactics rating is massively inflated here. I used to be able to hold nearly 2500 on there and im only 2060 uscf. it really doesnt matter much, too many variables

My tactics rating is deflated because I tend to use TT only on my iPad while laying in bed falling asleep or in the loo.

Play over chess minatures repeatedly in addition to solving many, many problems it can help sharpen your tactical sense like a razor if you keep at it for like 7-9 months.

Chernev's classic in descriptive I use this every day to warm up before solving problems I work through the whole book for about 3-4 hours.

Good luck improving your tactical skills!

I don't really care about the rating in tactics trainer. I like solving the problems and it really has helped me to a point. I wish my blitz rating was higher but in positional games with little tactics I do poorly under time pressure. Enjoy solving the problems in TT and don't worry about the rating and you'll be surprised to see it go up!

I just saw your rating...never mind what I posted...

I do believe i understand why the tactics rating are lower now. The averge time to solve the problems is the problem. Imagine if you are solving the problems early, when there are few people in this site, it is much easier to get above average. say if you solved it in 2-min, you might be in the top 25%. If you solved it after 1000 people already tried, 2-min might be under 50%.

There should be an absolute scale, 30 sec get you x rating, 1 min get you y rating etc.

What was your friend's real rating? 2k?

In the end, it does not matter too much of course, I was just trying to understan why so many people seem to have high peak tactics rating. But I like this 25 tactics a day thing, not too many not too little.

Avatar of Squishey

@aman  yea something like that

@mcmodern    I haven't done any problems, but to my knowledge, tactics isn't low here

My tactics rating peaked at almost 1700 about 2 years ago, but now is only about 1450.  It is possible that my playing strength is lower due to age, etc.  However, it seems that the problems are harder now for a given problem rating level.  I'm not sure I've done a good job of explaining what I am experiencing, but any thoughts would be appreciated.  I would especially like to hear from people who do tactics problems here on a consistent basis, as I have.

At a certain point you find out the "antidote for chess puzzles". You know there is a winning move and it has to do with the last move played. As easy as that

Now I know the reason for high tactical ratings. If you solve them enough times, you will run into them again and again and again. So the rating is more a reflection of how well you remember the solution rather than how well you are tactically. I am sure doing the exercises help your tactics, but not to the point of tactic ratings would indicate.

I was around 2000 when I started, now I am up to 2400. I am not 400 points better today tactically compared to a few month ago, maybe a little better, I would say less than 100 points better. What have gotten better is now I have seen enough problems that cycle through many times and I can get 100% because of that. The rating calculation needs to be reworked in my opinion.

I guess you'd say that I'm an advanced beginner.  I do tactics training almost daily (5 free ones).  I seem to be unable to break through beyond 1150-1200.  Have you it a barrier that way?  How do you break through?

Personally I don't like the TT here. On lichess, not only is it unlimited for everybody but there is no timer. You gain or lose the same number of points no matter how long you take. I think it's a joke that if you take too long here you lose points even if you get the puzzle right. I don't care about solving puzzle X in X seconds, I care that I solve it in a reasonable time such as I would need to do in say a 30/0 game.

Yes, if you are only solving it based on pure tactical ability, everyone hit a wall sooner or later. However, if you keep doing it, you will hit the same problems again and again, by the second third or what ever time, you should be able  to solve it in a couple seconds, that's how people have ungodly ratings compared to their game ratings.
