Tactics Trainer - Stuck In 700s

I've done hundreds of Tactics Trainer puzzles, but I'm still in the 700s zone. This is in large part because I like to take my time to analyze the board for each puzzle, and several have time limits around 30 seconds or less so I lose points for taking too long. However, when I do get a puzzle wrong, I take my time to figure out why it was the wrong move and what the correct move should be.

How long does it take other people to progress past this point? I've been going through the lessons as well... I decided to get back into this after a year's break, but I'm just curious if I'm missing something since I'm going so slow.

Go at your pace.   If you want to go faster, then try that.   But as you soon find out, if you submit your answer to Tactics Trainer in a very short amount of time, you may very well overlook something.

What are your goals in chess ?   Do you want to be at your best level playing speed chess or playing standard or on-line chess ?

Dont get caught up in the rating.  It sounds like youre taking the correct approach by taking your time.  Keep doing this and the improvement will come.  I do the same thing.  I take my time, and make sure i fully understand the tactic, instead of rushing just to get some points.

My goal right now is mainly to be able to read a chessboard and clearly see what's going on without making simple mistakes like leaving a vital piece hanging. I'm starting to see a better picture already, so I think that's a good sign. In addition to that, I think I need to have a mental checklist of what to verify on each turn and what priorities certain tasks should be at. (Can I checkmate, can I take a hanging piece safely, can I develop, can I force my opponent, etc.)

I'm under no illusions of becoming an expert chess player, but I have a few friends that play chess and it would be nice to be on a more even footing with them. I prefer slow-paced chess either way; I don't like being rushed.
