I think you could be confusing a couple of things. I believe it's the opening strategy that one could hold off on until about 2000.

hmm .. that's encouraging. i was thinking i was a really limited player and that should focus only on tactics. good to know i can have a bit of variety. btw, what is your ranking on chess.com or do you have a FIDE rating?
I remember some people saying that you should only study tactics till you're 2000 strong. Is this true or an exaggeration. I have some books on positional chess like aagard's and marovic's and was wondering whether to shelve those till I get to a decent level.
