Take your checkmates like a Man!! Or dignified woman!

I am not one to profess chess philosophy, because I'm not your example of a  chess prodigy, but I do know what's the ethical thing to do and to put it plainly, the cool thing to do. I've got some pet peaves for certain chess antics I've noticed lately. For example, if a checkmate on you is inevitable, take it! Or at least resign. Letting the time run out doesn't save you face, it makes you weasel-ish.  And I love the chess guys that get snarky in their texting like they're supercool jock stars lol. I love chess, but I do accept it's an intelectual game. I'm not going to wear sports gloves and sunglasses and start high fiving after my wins. The other thing that's annoying are the texting tough guys. They're kind of like phone tough guys and email tough guys. But the cool thing is, there are a lot of other nice classy people out there.  But the rest of you suck! :0)

I say that taking the checkmate like a man or dignified woman is very correct and resigning is also ethical.  Yeah, running your time out for a lose is pretty stupid.  Shame on them

With a lost game/losing endgame, it's always a good strategy to find a chance for a stalemate or tactical opportunity.  I don't advocate giving up, but when it's basically over and the other guy's clearly good enough to not mess up, resigning's an option.  Mostly, it's better to play it out, especially if your opponent's not too great on endgames.

As for time stalling: I've seen it happen during one of the matches our high school played.  G70, down a piece and his queen pinned, our first board's opponent stalled out his last 50 minutes. ....It wasn't fun times.  Even on the internet, where you (maybe) won't be assaulted for doing it, it's not cool. (Of course, not talking about the legitimate vacations or accidental timeouts that are sometimes mistaken for stalling) Probably the worst way to give up a game.  Resigning >>>> time stalling.

Well, tactful stalling in search for a stalemate is fine. I mean when they purposely stagnate to opt losing the game with a time run out instead of taking the checkmate or resigning, hate that.

I hate when someone creates a game with a 3 day time limit per move and then complains that the game isn't moving fast enough and keeps typing in messages telling you to move NOW! If you want to play a blitz game, then play live chess. Don't set up a game with a long time limit per move and then yell at the other guy when he makes one or two moves and then logs off for the rest of the day.

Time limits are agreed by both parties; if it's too long then agree to a lower time limit, not difficult really.

good point. I've actually benefitted from the one day games when opponents run out of time. although when i first started playing chess here i lost a bunch of games that way, forgot about them til I got the message in my email, hard lesson.

I was once playing a guy in a carls jr.  He made a move.  I moved and had about 3 different ways to mate him no matter what he did.  He stared at the position for 10mins and then said that they had to close....BUt, I "probably would have won".  Then he wanted to move somewhere else to play.  No thanks.

I admit, I'm a texter.  My last 2 emails to my friend when something like THIS:

"Dude, some 13 year old beat me last round.  This round, his 14 year old brother got me in 12 moves.  St00pid queen trap."

"Take your checkmates like a Man!! Or dignified woman!"

Why is it necessary to specify dignified when referring to women but not when talking about men?

uhoh, feminazi, lol. I used dignified as the adjective because acting like a man has an understood social indication of undeterred dignity fueled by ogrish masculinity. Acting like a woman doesn't carry a social definition of masculine strength, so i used dignified as my meaning marker. I'm well aware women can be as tough as men, unfortunately, the English language doesn't express that in effeminated adjectives or objects.

Always check the timeout stats on a player before challenging or accepting a challenge.  Anything under 5% is probably due to inadvertant mistakes, life problems, etc, anything over 10% has to be deliberate.

because the fact that men are dignified goes without saying
