Hi Everyone,

Lately I have been playing chess everyday and not only one or two games but having a lot of free time I would spend hours playing. I am just wondering if there is a certain system that you guys utilize on daily basis and if some of you take a break?

I am only asking because I have noticed that my sleep is at night is very irregular and not as deep and restful as it used to be, and most of the time I have dreams about moving pieces on the board, etc... Those are not nightmares, but have similar nature since the essence of my sleep has change on a way i do not get the required rest at night....Anyone of you happen to have the same experience?

thanks

Ha!  My chess games don't haunt me at night, but a break is nice now and then.  I joined just about a year ago, and I'm taking my second vacation break from games right now, probably for a total of a couple weeks or so before I'll start them up again.  All the sudden I just didn't feel like accessing my games.  I took my first vacation break around the beginning of June, so maybe my concentration period is 5 or 6 months at a time.

I go through cycles.  There are times when I am checking my games every few hours to see if anyone has sent a move, and there are time when I say "good enough, I'll take a look tommorow."  That why I prefer the 3 day per move timeframe.  You don't get the guys who take forever to get back to you, but you can let things slide for a day or two if the old brain just isn't up for it on a given day.

Trust me on this one!  Exercise!!!    You can use weights, I have a bow flex, also walks, and a excercise bike for cardiovascular fitness. It not only keeps you fit and sleep good, but for me it seems to clear my head. I do this three times a week but walk every day with my dogs in the forest. Too much study and not enough exercise, is a bad formula!Wink

Hi,

Thank you all for the comments. I actually do exercise every day. One of the things that I have enveloped in my daily routines is yoga. The type of yoga i do is very rigorous and burns a lot of calories...

I like the fact that you have a forest near by where you live, GhostNight, because this can be a very refreshing activity which helps you get a new prospective by ridding you of the accumulation of residues of constant processing of information. Unfortunately, where I live, we have no forest near by and I am surrounded by concrete tall bldgs.

Hi,

I sometimes happen to experience similar effects from overplaying, especially bullet games seem to exhaust the brain quite a bit also affecting my performance.

I have noticed thou that every now and then after I take a break for a day or two I seem to come back relaxed and at a better level than the one I used to be.

My advice is, just take breaks in between games and a day or two everynow and then and don't do more than 5-6 exhausting games, or more than 20-25 ego pumping games (against weaker opponents).

Good luck and keep it up! :)

I feel the same as you guys! Even that I started playing in a couple of months, but i feel the same in last weeks..

I do a lot of exercises, at least three time per week, and spent a lot of time with my dog outside, and even then I wake up per night thinging moves :( ..Maybe yoga would help, I need to try it.. The attitude that I should win every game is getting me very strained, and I think this is the main problem
