I talk to my king bishop all the time, he tells me he's the most important piece in the game. A man of the church wouldn't lie about such things.
Although he's never explained why he keeps changing colour, which is a bit weird.

@andyclifton: not even the "fun loving obese peoples" one ?
No. God, does that sound like fun! Do you have a link?
My knights tell me I'm too thick to unleash their full potential.
My rooks keep telling me that dubious exchange sacs are not 'interesting' or 'cool'.
pfftt... ask goldendog he might know but I think the Haywood account is closed along with his BS stuff.
The internal dialogue is always with us constantly from the moment we learn to talk. Either that or I am completely insane.

Actually, I don't even bother talking to myself anymore (I never seem to listen anyway).

Well, I don't know how useful the specific verbiage in your head is during a game... as long as it points to the same correct ideas. I admit when I heard "talking to your pieces" I thought it was too romanticized, so much so that it clouded the actual idea. But for some players perhaps this phrasing really hits the nail on the head.
So in books it's not so much you think as the author writes "an open file is good for a rook" and so in your next game you play Re1 on an open file. It's better to get at the idea behind it... why is it a good move. "Rooks on an open file" is just a common pattern where the primary idea is often fulfilled.
In my personal conceptualization, all good/ great/ brilliant moves can all be reduced to increasing my mobility/activity or reducing my opponent's. This can be either on the board in general or in an important area.
So now during the game you see the open file, but also have to ask yourself, is that actually an active post?
I never saw anything that Haywood guy ever did.
