Tarrasch game

Hi games,

I found this position in the Chess Mentor. It's supposed to come out of a Tarrasch game. Could anybody refer me to the whole game? Seems like the result of a Muzio Gambit or something similar.

chesstempo.com 's database allows searching by FEN, but since the number of halfmoves and number of moves are unknown, I had to try

rnbk1b1r/pppp1Q1p/2q5/3n4/4P3/3P4/PPP3PP/2B2R1K w - *
and
rnbk1b1r/pppp1Q1p/2q5/3n4/4P3/3P4/PPP3PP/2B2R1K b - *

... which yielded no results. Maybe I'm overly optimistic about that star wildcard working, but e.g. searching for games with 1.e4 that way works (rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/4P3/8/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKBNR b KQkq e3 *). Maybe something wrong in my FEN notation?

could be a variation of the game

Avatar of hotwax

Hm, could be indeed. Wasn't there any more info in the chess mentor lesson?

No pretty vague. It's this one: http://www.chess.com/chessmentor/view_lesson?id=2230

called "End of the line" in Advanced Tactics.

I thought of the Muzio Gambit first, but how could the White a-rook have disappeared? Maybe just some King's Gambit variation.

Looks like Tarrasch didn't play a lot of King's Gambit games. What other openings would make sense here?

Also: I expect him to have won this game, would be quite a shame if he hadn't.

That a whole rook disappeared isn't that weird itself: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1242893

Well, in any opening variation, it would be kind of weird to have the a rook gone with a bishop on c1... I tried searching on FEN with the bishop on other positions which allow the course's continuation but again to no avail.

Now you know Tarrasch played with odds, if you scan through http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1015076 control F ''tarrasch'' I expect you to find it. And indeed, out of interest I did so myself: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1341098

Your most welcome buddy :)

Hah! An odds game, hadn't thought of that. Good catch, Blackfoxx.

Nice!

Thanks for the help guys.

In summary, way I solved the mystery was as follows:
-Tarrasch' games profile on chessgames, then checking all remarkable games as stated with Tarrasch being white.
-Found a game with him giving odds
-Search for the page of all recorded odds games
-Control F and search for Tarrasch
-Open all the games in a new tab

Nice. I always like this sort of games. A lot to learn. Show how the GMs have a much higher understanding of the game while most amateurs are focused mainly on material.

Thanks!
