What books would you guys recommend?

Soviet Chess Primer by Maizelis

I'll read into this as well

My god thanks everyone for the support!

I would recommend “Play Winning Chess” by Seirawan, before tackling Soviet Chess Primer by Maizelis.

Daniel Naroditsky is doing a instructive "Speedrun to 3000" video series on his YouTube channel where he basically explains every move and the reasoning behind it as well. He starts out simple at 400 ELO with opening principles and common mistakes/how to punish them. How to improve your pieces, finding the best square and making a short plan for getting the piece to that square. With a mix of positional play and attacking chess. Provoke weaknesses in your opponent's position. Make threats and force your opponent to play defensively and place their pieces in suboptimal positions. Talking about subtle drawbacks of a certain move. Diagonals/ files open, certain tactics that are available in a position due to good development. And a lot more that I missed.

Oh yeah, and John Bartholomew has a chess fundamentals youtube series of, I don't know, something like 6 videos. They're really good IMO.

I find his standard series very instructive. A lot of games and you can hear a lot of what he thinks about the position. Of course, I went through his climbing the rating ladder and fundamentals series as well.

You’re better than me, my rating is around 600 and starting to decline

Ratings are tough on this site, you are in the 75.5% percentile for rapid... you are better than 75% of people. It also takes a long time to improve. Be patient and enjoy the game happy.png.

I just suck at it, and I'm not getting better.  Makes me just think of how dumb I am.

Quit for a while, take a break.

Bro, are you tryna be one of the chess elitists?  Just chill out, okay?  I play for fun, but it's not fun cuz I'm not getting better.  So I come here for someone to give me some help, but instead I'm met with someone who perfectly embodies chess elitism.  This is why people don't learn the beauty of the game, cuz some of the community sucks.

He is trolling

It took me embarrassingly long to figure that out XD, but I did figure it out after reading some of his other forums.

Well losing on here is a given. Considering how huge the number of people cheating here are and the people who sandbag their ratings just to make other people miserable. It's probably the worst site on the internet for any where near accurate ratings.

It's really not that bad... cheaters won't stop you from getting to whatever percentile you should be at. The ratings are hard though and distributed lower than other sites.

I just started to play lol

It's a wonderful game, provided you don't go insane and/or get tilted wink.png

Learn something new, the game is always rewarding and worth it. Don't play speed chess if your goal is improvement. Rapid 10|0 is perfect.
