Tchigorin defense to queen's gambit

I have noticed there is a bit of a fad on chess.com for Tchigorin type systems with Nc6 against Queen's gambit. I have had many recent games as white that started 1 d4, d5 2 Nf3, Nf6 3 c4, Nc6. I have mostly gotten good positions as white. Isn't it simply an inferior way for black to play? Is their merit to this system in black follows it up right?
