As a chess player, you want your kids to play chess early. Chess concepts like Checkmate Pawn Promotion Material Value aren't easy to understand for kids. I suggest playing the following games before introducing chess.

Teach Gomoku first.

That is what I actually did myself and what I do as a teacher.

Use a Battleship set to play Gomoku. It introduces you to Algebraic Notation.

That was what I did, not by design but by chance.

You can now do it by design.

First, play Battleship.

Before that watch Sesame Street to learn ABCs and 123's. I did. English is not my first language.

Just play real chess with them, but with 3 men.
KQ vs. K, KR vs. K, KP vs. K
Change sides with them when they cannot do it.
