The best player in the world 2016

Before the Chess Oscar was discontinued this award for the best player of the year went to Magnus Carlsen the last five years (2009-13). After that there has been no serious discussion concerning that someone else could have been the best player (for 2014 and 2015 Carlsen would have been awarded the Chess Oscar with a landslide), but for 2016 this has changed.

Kramnik stated at the end of the London tournament that Wesley So has played the best chess in the world in 2016, and some others share the assessment that So has been better than Carlsen in 2016. The question is how easily this can be supported by stats.

To begin with the classical tournaments both played:

Tata: Carlsen 1st, So 4-6th

Bilbao: Carlsen 1st, So 3-4th (Carlsen won with white against So in 26 moves)

In speed chess:

Leuven: Carlsen 1st, So 2nd

Paris: Carlsen 2nd, So 4th

Carlsen also won the title match against Karjakin and the Norway blitz, while So lost a match against Ding Liren, finished second in the US Championships and Ultimate Blitz Challenge, won Sinquefield Cup and London, and finished fourth in Ilse of Man. So had a higher TPR than Carlsen in the Chess Olympiad, but played on third board while Carlsen played first.

It's doubtful if these results agree with Kramnik's statement that So has played better
than Carlsen. At least Carlsen scored a plus against So in both classical and speed chess, finished ahead in all tournaments both played, and won the World Championship as well.

My guess is that Carlsen after all would have been given his 8th Chess Oscar in a row if the award still existed. He did win the classical tournaments he played as well as the title match, and in rapid and blitz events he finished second in the one he didn't win.

Here performance ratings are listed for the past 12 months. Carlsen still owns.

Indeed, while Carlsen has the clearly best TPR So is just outside the top five.

Carlsen continues to be th best in the world, but what has changed was his opposition. Usually only Anand, Caruana, Aronian and to a lesser extent, Kramnik could oppose him. Now So, Vachier-Lagrave and Karjakin have risen as threts to his dominance. Can he keep number 1 throughout the whole of 2017? We`ll have to wait and see...

Many interesting stats in the TPR link posted by Molotok89, one of them being Wei Yi's comparative "fall" from grace. Many have claimed that he should be ranked as better than Carlsen at the same age but his development hasn't been all that impressive lately.

While Carlsen was top three in the world TPR wise in 2008 (from 17 years 1 month to 18 years 1 month), and top 15 in 2007 (from 16 years 1 month to 17 years 1 month), Wei Yi has been #50 the last dozen months (from 16 years 7 months to 17 years 7 months).

At the current age of 17½ years Wei Yi is #39 on the live rating list. Carlsen was 17 years 10 months when he first reached the #1 spot on the live rating list. So there's still some way to go for Wei Yi.
