Im a big fan of the sicilian defence and at around the 800-1000 range I saw alot of 2. Bc4 (The Bowdler Attack) and I was looking over it reccently and honestly though it dosnt really accomplish much I dont see too much wrong with it either.
(this isnt established theory I just wanted to try and find a good counter for this sicilian defence)
Once white ignitiates a Bowdler there are 4 main directions black can take the game:
2.. d6:
Black can try for a Lipnitsky, Najdorf to try and avoid the Bowdler entirely and give white a second chance. Theres not really anything wrong with this move, and if you are experienced in an open sicilian its an alright choice to try and set the game back into preparation. heres an example of how this could happen.
Another varitaion black can chose in this is to decline cxd4 and instead go 5.. e6 and prepare to kick out the bishop, or just go right away with 5.. b5 but allow 6. Bd5 Nxd5 7. exd5/Nxd5 (Im not really sure whats better in the long run because 7. exd5 just doubles your pawns but Nxd5 allows black to just attack with tempo enough that doubled pawns look like mercy.)
2.. e6/a6:
In this variation black instantly attempts to punish the move Bc4 and kick out the bishop and prevent fried liver forever. black will likely play both e6, a6, b5 if Nc3, and d5 otherwise. this is an aggressive opening dead set on kicking the bishop of c4 and white will likely attempt to finish developement, castle, and go Re1 or go d4 and develope on the now safer d file. heres an example of how this could happen.
2.. Nc6:
This is a much tamer 4 knights varitation of the bowdler and honestly it looks really scary for black, and it dosnt look like the bishops really going anywhere.
Both sides will first develope both knights then while black goes e6,a6 white will have ample times to castle and go d4. and I think d4 is an amazing move not only does it break open the position it also takes advantage that black has not castled or develeoped much and when all is traded white is going to have to trade queens and lose castling rights and waste alot of time trying to get the king to saftey whites peices fully developed. I couldnt win this position but thats just me.
be my geust if you have a fix for this position but looking at it it dosnt seem to good for black
2.. Nf6:
Nf6 is kinda like the evil version of Nc6 because if white decides to go the very natural and pretty decent move 3. e5 then that gives black the option of doing the absolutly ludicrous move 3.. d4.
if en passant (exd6) then you can take with the queen if your a civilized person, but this isnt a civilized variation black continues 4.. e6 and white just has to sit there and have deal with it.
if Be2 or Bf1 then black can do another bastardly move Nfd7 allowing both f4 and e6 because if e6 then maybe those doubled pawns by my king look bad for now but when my rooks there with a fianchetto its gonna be another story, and f4 just has me up a tempo and I cant find a good counter for white.
if Bb5+ then black should go Bc7 and try for a canal attack but white skips moving the knight, but white is likely going to take away the fun by retreating the bishop, so black cant go Nfd7 anymore.
White can also just defend the e pawn with 3. Nc3 or 3.d3 though d3 blocks the bishop out so judging by the other variations its not the safest move. I cant find anything wrong with 3. Nc3, but usually it just continues as a normal e6, a6 variation so not too much intresting I see with it.
