The chess player is the 'has-been' of the world

it USED TO be better. Look at THIS ladies Glee- clearly beatin' your kids but cherry red, was the secret of the victorian success (at repressing all adult emotion...)

wells, its horse meat!
this is a GREAT thread. I like it!
for courtesy sake please help. if you don't have a submission- whats you choice?- I'm kind of moved by #8.
its NOT fine art, but perhaps I can keep it going.... (oc where this is going is "offtopic' but we can have fun on the way)
That's a chessplayer for sure!

OP: I don't know a single chessplayer who matches your description of chessplayers. Are you in federal prison or something??

the OP's point of course is that we are ALL evil.
there's incriminating evidence in the pics. Anyway- Even if chessplayers aren't as a whole, aren't evil. I really do believe the Mufti would agree that most cc forum posters are...
you need to read some of the threads. contention, insults, and at-your-expense sarcasm all throughout the forums...

In fact, and I know this will offend people, but video games are a more rounded activity. Every game you see new graphics, you hear new sound, you're faced with many different combinations of tasks and puzzles. Some based on coordination and reflex, others on sound, on puzzle solving etc. And the variety of video games in general is greater. Video games have to be making more parts of the brain and senses work at once. But they're still pointless and generally not a beneficial activity.
Does it mean people shouldn't play chess or play video games? Generally I'd say no and that it depends on every individual. I am more concerned with chess players who try to elevate chess' status by citing either anecdotal evidence or inconclusive studies that somehow chess benefits the players. You do not have to justify your desire to spend time on chess. But you do have a responsibility not to misinform and trick parents, kids, and adult new players by convincing them that chess is beneficial to everybody or that it cannot do any harm.

Hi all!
I'm new to this site, and I can't figure out how to start a topic. I'm sure there's something obvious that I'm missing, and I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction. Thanks and sorry for the off-topic nature of this post!

Evil?? might be a bit too strong of a word. immature. too much time on their hands. selfish. narcisstic. self-absorbed. living in their mommy's basement maybe

How could I be a "has-been" if I was never a "is-be" in the first place?
Seriously though, I agree with most of what Dragwood wrote in post #30. I only disagree on 2 of his points.
Firstly, whether anecdotal or not, I am convinced that chess has helped me over the years in at least 3 ways: it has helped me meet new friends whose company I enjoyed for many hours, it has exercised my brain, and my performance at chess has given me valuable feedback about my health and mental state.
My second point actually is not a disagreement with what Dragwood wrote, but instead an extrapolation: almost all activities not directly related to acquiring food, water, air, shelter, and a procreative mate could said to be "pointless". So why single out chess and other games? Enjoying a movie, concert, or play are "pointless". Watching a beautiful sun set is "pointless". Enjoying a beer, glass of wine, or a fine scotch is "pointless". Dancing and singing (if not done aerobically) are "pointless". But maybe life is not about mere survival? Maybe whatever/whomever created us (and all life throughout the multiverse) intended that life also contain "pointless" joy and "pointless" creativity?

His name is Karl Perrson. I don't know anything about him. I don't even know what those things are?
He was definitely influenced by Giger, as seen in the following work by Perrson:
That is kind of like Perrson's works when you google-image him

I suspect chess is, indeed, a waste of time.
But so are so many of the other things in life that people dedicate their time to.
In my circle of friends, golf is big. I actually like golf -- but compared to the 4-6 of hours playing it takes, the blistering heat, the lost balls, and the hundreds of bucks in various fees (course fees, cart fees, balls, clubs, etc.), I am generally more happy playing chess online on a computer.

If it is enjoyable to you and makes you generally happy, how is it a waste of time? Is it because you are not earning money while playing? Is it because your wife has told you it is a waste of time? do you feel guilt because you are not mowing the lawn or painting the spare room? What makes it a waste of your time?
